YORK Velma Altland Frey, 86, was called home to heaven by the Lord on Monday, June 11, 2012, from Colonial Manor. She was the widow of John Altland and Bob Frey. Born on July 28, 1925, in East Berlin, she was the daughter of the late Verna and Melvin Chronister. She was a homemaker and had worked as a CNA for Barley Convalescent Home. Velma was a member of Bible Baptist Church. She was a strong willed lady who was a straight shooter. She had a kind heart and was openly affectionate with her family. Velma loved to cook. She offered motherly advice and welcomed others into the family. She leaves to cherish her memory two sons, Kenneth Altland and wife, Yvonne, and Barry Altland and wife, Karen, all of Dover; a daughter, Janet Auman of Abbottstown; three grandsons, Rodney Pifer and Barry Pifer ,both of York, and Scott Pifer of East Berlin; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Grace Altland, Scott Pifer, II, and Dwayne Schaffer; and a sister, Jean Baker of Abbottstown. She was preceded in death by a sister, Louise Lawyer. The viewing will be on Saturday, June 16, from 11 a.m. to 12 noon at Gladfelter Funeral Home, Inc., 822 E. Market St., York. The service will begin at 12 noon with Brother Brian King officiating. Interment will follow in East Berlin Cemetery.
