YORK Joan Sophie Cassel, 79, died Monday, November 5, 2012, at her residence surrounded by her loving family after a brief illness. She was the wife of John Donald Cassel of York. Mr. and Mrs. Cassel celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary on September 25, 2012. Born May 21, 1933, in Manheim, she was the daughter of the late Harry F. and Bertha L (Pfoutz) Frey. Joan was a registered nurse. She retired from the York County Nursing Home and was previously employed at York Hospital and at Barley's East. She was also a volunteer for Memorial Hospital of York. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church of Dallastown where she served as a greeter and member of the sewing club. Joan was a 1951 graduate of Manheim High School and played field hockey, basketball, ran track, and was a cheerleader. She was a graduate of Lancaster General Hospital School of Nursing. She loved and enjoyed family gatherings, taking care of her grandchildren both two legged and four legged, classical music, vacationing by the ocean, and knitting scarves for the needy. In addition to her husband, she was survived by a son, Steven Donald and his wife, Kathleen Cassel of York; a daughter, Donna Marie Cassel of Wrightsville; and two grandsons, Eric Allen Cassel and John Benjamin Cassel, both of York. She is also survived by two sisters, Patricia L. Miller of Manheim and Barbara L. Perkins of Tempe, Ariz.; and a brother, Larry F. Frey of York. Memorial services will be held Friday, November 9, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church of Dallastown, 126 W. Main St., Dallastown, with the Rev. Lawrence Cunnings officiating. A visitation will be held Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church. Following a luncheon at the church, burial will be held at Manheim Fairview Cemetery, Manheim.
