SHREWSBURY Dr. Charles W. Griffin, III, 85, passed away on Thursday, December 27, 2012, at the Barbara J. Egan Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Shrewsbury. He was the husband of the late Rosalee J. (Bonner) Griffin and his first wife, the late Dolores A. (Daniel) Griffin. A graveside service will be held at the Joseph Giesey Memorial Cemetery in Shrewsbury in the future at a date to be determined. Dr. Griffin was born on December 30, 1926, in Norfolk, Va., to the late Charles W. Griffin, Jr. and Lucy Virginia (Thompson) Griffin. He graduated from Camp Hill High School in absentia in 1945 while serving in the United States Army as a Staff Sergeant in the Western Pacific Theater of Operations for 15 months during World War II. Dr. Griffin attended the University of Maryland College Park under the "G.I. Bill" and earned his B.S. degree in 1951, M.S. degree in 1953, and was awarded his Ph.D. in Microbiology in 1959. He enjoyed his family - especially his grandchildren - classical music, bagpipes, and reading about U.S. history. Dr. Griffin attended St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Shrewsbury and was a member of New Freedom V.F.W. Post 7012. Dr. Griffin is survived by his sons, Wes and his wife, Kim of Felton, and Mark and his wife, Cheryl of Chickamauga, Ga. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Emily, Matthew, and Mark. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Dr. Griffin's name may be made to the USO or the Disabled American Veterans. J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, 24 N.
