SPRING GROVE Russell E. L. Hamme, 83, passed away on January 16, 2013, at York Hospital. He was the loving husband of Florence M. (Shaffer) Hamme; together they shared over 61 years of marriage. Russell was born in Brodbecks on February 19, 1929, the son of the late Lloyd L. Hamme and Arlene (Gladfelter) Hamme. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army 555 RCT Artillery Unit during the Korean War and was honorably discharged. He worked for York Corrugating for over 38 years and retired as a plant manager in 1991. He was a past commander for East Berlin VFW Post 8896 and a life member of West Manchester VFW Post # 7374. He was also a member of the Military Order of the Cooties and a Seam Squirrel. He also enjoyed reading about American military history and watching westerns on TV. In addition to his wife Florence; he is survived by his sons, Les Hamme and wife Cindy of Dover, Bryan "Scoot" Hamme and his wife, Bonnie of Spring Grove and Kevin "Bud" Hamme and his wife, Michele of York; his nine grandchildren Christina, Christopher, Zachary, Adam, Ciera, Chad, Kari, Kaleb and Kenneth. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers Lloyd L. HammeJr. and Robert E. Hamme and his sons Rick Hamme in 2003 and most recently Carl G. Hamme on Sunday, January 13, 2013. A funeral service in celebration of his life will be held on Monday at 10 a.m. at Irwin-Beck Funeral Home & Cremation Service PC, 175 N Main St., Spring Grove with Rev. Sarah Rentzel Jones officiating. He will be laid to rest following the service at Susquehanna Memorial Gardens with full military honors provided by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. Viewings will be held on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Monday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the funeral home.
