COLUMBIA, SC On Monday, January 28, 2013, John Louis Awkward, 73, departed this life at Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia, S.C. Born June 3, 1939, in Avon, Va., he was the son of the late Clarence Everett and Marie Maggie Hunter Awkward. John leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 19 years, Patricia Awkward; children, Michele Walker of York, Michele Mosley (Robert) of York, Andrea Kirkpatrick (Timothy) of Baltimore, Md., John Jr. of Baltimore, Brian of Harrisburg, and Christopher Awkward (Beverly) of York; stepsons, Kevin Rumph of Columbia, S.C., and Telly Rumph (Yolanda) of Rock Hill, S.C.; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; seven step great-grandchildren; sib-lings, Mary Johnson of York, Barbara Nelson (Harold) of Wrightsville, Elizabeth Newton (Larry) of Troy, Va., Benjamin Arkward (Theresa) of Troy, Va., and Richard Arkward (Jacqueline) of Dover; five sisters-in-law, and one brother-in-law, all of Columbia, S.C.; and a special friend, James Evans, also of Columbia, S.C. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Bernadean Walker; a brother, Clarence Awkward; and a sister, Matilda McQuaige John attended the public school systems of Albemarle County in Virginia. He also served in the United States Army in the late 50's. Upon leaving the military, he moved to York, where he spent most of his adult life. He was employed at Caterpillar Tractor Company where he worked until his retirement in 1999. John was a free spirited person who loved life and loved being in the company of those who cherished life. He was a devoted friend and blessed with many talents that he willingly shared with those in need. In 1989 he was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses and worked faithfully spreading Jehovah's word about God's righteous Kingdom that will soon be established upon the earth. A memorial service will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses; 50 W. Cottage Place, York, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 9, 2013. He will be laid to rest in the Arkward's Cemetery, in Troy, Va.
