Rhoades YORK "Miss Dee", as she was affectionately called by her friends and loved ones, was called home to rest on Monday, February 4, 2013, at Manor Care Kingston Court Nursing Home. She was 97, was born March 10, 1915, in Jacksonville, Fla., and was raised in Asbury Park, N.J. She relocated to York in 1934, where she became a member of the Queen Esther Temple #105 on July 29, 1935. Daughter Rhoades met and married Raymond A. Rhoades in 1938. They shared 59 beautiful years together until he passed away in November 1997. Miss Dee was a member of Small Memorial AME Zion Church, where she was a member of the Senior Usher Board and Missionary Society. Daughter Rhoades was a member of the Keystone Past Daughter Ruler's Council, Past State President, and Past Grand Daughter Ruler. She was a charter member of the Charles E. Williams Ladies Auxiliary #794, a member of the York Chapter AARP, and past matron of Deborah Chapter #26, O.E.S. and the Harrisburg Assembly #50 Golden Circle. "Miss Dee" worked for the York City School District from 1969-1974 as a reading teacher's aide and from 1974-1994 as a crossing guard. In later years she was instrumental in the lives of children in her work with the York City School District Grandparents' Program. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her foster daughter, Joann Terry, and leaves to cherish her memory a foster daughter, Eleanor Terry, and a step-son, Edward R. Williams. She was the proud grandmother of seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a niece, Mrs. Josephine Freeman of Philadelphia. She was an energetic and vibrant woman who was always on the go and willing to help anyone - she never said no. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends and remembered for her caring spirit, generosity and her zeal for life. A viewing will be held at Small Memorial AME Zion Church, 401 S. Queen St., York, PA 17401 on Saturday, February 9, 2013, from 9 to 11 a.m. followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 11 a.m. Memorial contributions can be made to Small Memorial AME Zion Church.
