YORK Julia Carson (Kurtz) Guggenheim, 88, of West Manchester Township, passed away Tuesday, March 5, 2013, at her residence. Her final days were spent comfortably and surrounded by loved ones. She was the wife of the late Raymond Guggenheim. Born March 8, 1924, in York, a daughter of the late William H. and Mary R. (Schmidt) Kurtz, she was a graduate of Smith University and had worked as a Social Worker for Beaver County. She met her husband while traveling in Switzerland and after marriage, lived there and raised her family from the late 1940's until returning to York in the mid 1980's to be near to her ailing mother. She enjoyed gardening and flowers, painting ceramic dishes, knitting, animals, cooking, and entertaining. Mrs. Guggenheim is survived by a daughter, Isabel Maire and her husband, Claude of Switzerland; two sons, Maurice W. Guggenheim and his wife, Mary-Laurence of Switzerland, and Charles H. Guggenheim and his wife, Lesli of Carmel, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Chloe, Damien, Tiffany, Isaline, Myriam, Stephen, and Gregory; and three great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her adoring cousin and lifelong friend, Jody Appell, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Julia was also preceded in death by three sisters, Isabel Satterthwaite, Mary (Molly) Hough, and Della (Sis) Acker. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 9, 2013, at Prospect Hill Cemetery, with Chaplain Betty Fundalewicz officiating. Guests should meet at the Pennsylvania Ave. entrance to the cemetery at 10:45 a.m. Kuhner Associates Funeral Directors, Inc., 863 S. George St., York, is in charge of arrangements.
