SEVEN VALLEYS Rodney P. Miller, 45, passed away Saturday, April 27, 2013. He was the loving husband of Michelle D. "Shelly" (Keener) Miller, with whom he celebrated their 21st wedding anniversary on September 7, 2012. Mr. Miller was born on February 6, 1968, in York, son of Paul T. and Elaine M. (Thoman) Miller of Seven Valleys. Rodney attended Dallastown Area School District. He was a graduate of York County Vocational Technical School, Class of 1986. Following in his older brothers footsteps, Rodney joined the Loganville Fire Co. as a Junior Volunteer at the age of 16. Through his close association with strong leaders like Stan Brown and his son Scott, Rodney perfected his leadership skills. After serving as 1st Assistant Fire Chief under Scott Brown, he was elected Chief in 2001 by his peers. For a number of years he and his brother, Gary served as neighboring Fire Chiefs, with Gary leading the Community Volunteer Fire Dept. of Seven Valleys while Rodney served as Loganville's Fire Chief. On numerous occasions they would respond to calls together, regardless of which area the emergency was located. Rodney served as a firefighter for 29 years. When as a young friend and neighbor, Zac Sweitzer approached him about becoming a volunteer fire fighter, he was proud and honored to be his mentor. Like Rodney, Zac lost his life on Interstate 83, Thanksgiving morning, 2008. Rodney was a self employed general carpenter and mason. By trade he was a tool and die maker. He was previously employed by Stewart Connectors. Memberships include, Salem United Church of Christ, Jacobus. In addition, he was an active member in the Loganville Fire Co.; Seven Valleys Community Fire Co., and the Fire Chief Assoc. Rodney was an avid hunter and was surrounded by a strong close-knit family, however, when his pager sounded, his priority was to help anyone in need. Even after his passing, he continued to help others by being a Gift of Life donor. In addition to his wife and parents, survivors include, a brother, Gary L. Miller and his wife, Julie of Spring Grove, three nieces Lindsay M. Miller, Madison M. Luring, Mariah E. Luring and a nephew, Kyle A. Miller. Viewings will be held Thursday, May 2, 2013, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Grace Fellowship Church, 1405 Seven Valleys Rd., York. Funeral service will begin at 10 a.m. Friday, May 3, 2013, at the church. Officiating will be Rev. Thomas E. Beck of St. Peter's Church, Seven Valleys and Rev. Ed Robbins of Zion Lutheran Church, Glen Rock. Final resting place will be in St. Peter's Yellow Church Cemetery, Seven Valleys. Fireman rites will be conducted by numerous fire departments. At the families request, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to your local fire department. Arrangements were entrusted to the Robert M. Goodling Funeral Service, Seven Valleys.
