YORK Douglas J. Smith, 72, passed away, Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at York Hospital. He was the husband of Linda J. (Zimmerman) Smith, whom he married 47 years ago on June 11, 1966. Douglas was born April 29, 1941, in Saginaw, Michigan, and was the son of the late C. Wayne and Marjory (Sawin) Smith. He graduated from Allentown High School in 1959, East Stroudsburg University in 1964 and Millersville University in 1970 with his Master of Education. Douglas taught at Dallastown Area School District for 31 years before retiring in 1994. He also was the former co-owner with his wife, Linda, of the Framers and Framers Gallery in East York. He was a member of the East York Rotary Club. He was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church where he was past Administrative Board Chairman, past Pastor-Parish Committee Chairman and former Sunday School Teacher. In addition to his wife, Linda, Douglas is survived by his son, Marcus J. Smith of Switzerland; his daughter, Abbey E. Bauer and her husband Todd of Charlottesville, Va.; his five grandchildren, Sarah, Jon Robert, Lauren, Anna and Zackary; and his sister Nancy K. Flemming of Colorado. Due to a previously scheduled event at Bethany United Methodist Church, Doug's memorial service will begin at 11 a.m., Saturday at First Church of The Brethren, 2710 Kingston Road, York. Visitation will immediately follow the service on Saturday at First Church of The Brethren. Burial will be private in Dallastown Union Cemetery. Pastor Dennis McCleary will be officiating at his service. Diehl Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Inc., Mt. Wolf, is assisting the family.
