NEW FREEDOM William H. Reed, 88, died Sunday, September 15, 2013, at York Hospital. He was the husband of Mary E. (Ryer) Reed, to whom he was married 67 years on July 3, 2013. A viewing will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, Inc., 24 N. Second St., New Freedom. A funeral liturgy will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday from St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, 315 N. Constitution Ave., New Freedom, with the Rev. Joshua R. Brommer, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with full military honors by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. He was born November 6, 1924, in New Freedom, a son of the late Charles H. and Lizzie M. (Peppler) Reed. BIll was one of the founders and Vice-President of his family company, C.H. Reed, Inc., in Hanover. He retired from the business in 1986. He was a U.S. Army Veteran HQ Battery 156 FABN 44th Infantry Division, serving in WWII. Bill saw action in France, Germany, Belguim, Austria, and Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the French Freedom Medal for his involvement in the Normandy Invasion. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church and a former member of the St. John's Jewels. He was a life member of New Freedom V.F.W. Post 7012 and a member of the American Legion Post 14 in Hanover. He was also a member of the National Battle of the Bulge Survivors. Bill enjoyed Army reunions, weight lifting, woodworking, and boating. He especially enjoyed working and playing outdoors with his grandchildren, and walking on the beach with his daughter, Sheri when she was little. In addition to his wife, Bill is survived by three children; Dennis B. Reed and his wife, Lynn of Phoenix, Md., Steven M. Reed and his wife, Judy of Sunbury, Northumberland County, and Sheri A. Martin of New Freedom; seven grandchildren, Bradley, Eric, Chris, Brian, Jason, Allison, and Nicole; and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and many other extended family members. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold J. and Donald E. Reed; and one sister, Kay R. Rogers.
