John L. Sargeant Obituary
YORK John L. "Sarge" Sargeant 84, of The Haven at Springwood, York, formerly of Kutztown, died Sunday, October 27, 2013, in Rest Haven Nursing Home, York, where he resided most recently. Born in Newark, N.J., he was a son of the late Thomas R. and Edna Sargeant. John was a 1947 graduate of Belleville Public Schools, Belleville, N.J. Mr. Sargeant was a veteran of both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Air Force, with service during the Korean War. John was employed first as a patrolman with the Pottstown Police Department from 1962 to 1965; he then worked as an enforcement agent for the Pennsylvania State Bureau of Liquor Control Enforcement from 1965 to 1983. He then served as a deputy sheriff with the Berks County Sheriff's Office, Reading, to complete his law enforcement career in 1995. Sarge was a member of Berks Lodge #71, Fraternal Order of Police; Ray A. Master Post 217, American Legion, Topton, Veterans of Foreign Wars; Blue Knights Motorcycle Club, Reading. He also was a member of Kutztown Fire Company where he served as a member of the Fire Police Unit. He is survived by his sons, Thomas R., husband of Diane M. (Crumbling) Sargeant, York, MSgt. Sean P., husband of Dolores Sargeant, Camp Pendleton, Calif.; daughters, Sandra J. (Sargeant), wife of Dale M. Gresh, Reading, and Kathy (Sargeant), wife of James D. Williams, Scranton. Other survivors include seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. There is also a brother, Norman J. Stein, San Jose, Calif. Funeral services will be held Friday, November 1, 2013 at 1 p.m. in Ludwick Funeral Homes, Inc., 333 Greenwich St., Kutztown, with Reverend Arthur L. Hahn officiating. Interment, with military honors provided by Ray A. Master Post 217, American Legion Honor Guard, Topton, and the U.S. Air Force, will follow in Berks County Memorial Gardens, Fleetwood.
