YORK Arthur J. Smith, 88, met his Lord Jesus and Savior on Friday, November 15, 2013, at Normandie Ridge with family by his side. He was the husband of Isabelle (Higgs) Smith with whom he shared 68 years of marriage. Born on November 9, 1925, in Midvale, Pa., he was the son of the late Daisy (Kipe) Smith Newcomer and Arthur J. Smith, Sr. He honorably served his country in World War II in the Merchant Marines. "Art", as he was fondly known, retired in 1988 from Safeway Grocery Stores after 30 years of service in York. He was the store manager for 15 years. He was an Ordained Deacon at several Baptist Churches in Pennsylvania and Florida. Mr. Smith possessed the "Gift of Hospitality" which he extended to guest speakers visiting at the churches. He was a loving husband, father, Pap, and Great- Grandpap, who will be deeply missed. Art and his wife enjoyed living in Florida for 20 years. He enjoyed three years of living at the Country Meadows on Trolley Road in York. Mr. Smith leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Isabelle; a devoted daughter, Isabelle Smith and husband, Jay, a granddaughter, Lisa Hoover and husband, Andrew, and three great-grandsons, Tyler, Christopher, and Michael Hoover, all of York; and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by siblings, Anna Martin, Louise Crider, Glen Smith, Samuel Smith, and Elwood Smith. Services and interment will be private at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery with full military rites by the Honor Guard.
