MANCHESTER Donald E. "Whitey" McCleary, 91, passed away at 4 p.m., Sunday, December 15, 2013, at his home. He was the husband of the late Joan M. (Lewis) McCleary who passed away on June 8, 2011. Donald was born August 31, 1922, in York, the son of the late Paul and Sadie (Sweeney) McCleary. He graduated from Manchester High School in 1939. He served proudly in the United State Navy during WWII and again during the Korean War. He was employed by the U. S. Federal Government for over 35 years before retiring in 1977. He worked at the Naval Ordnance Plant in York and the Naval Supply Depot in Mechanicsburg. He also had worked at the Overbrook Cafe for 30 years, PADE, and the American Wire Fabrics in Mount Wolf. He was a member of the Susquehanna V.F.W. Post 2493 in Mount Wolf; Shiloh American Legion; Wago Club; Hawks Club; Pleasureville American Legion; the former Yankee Club and Starview Sportsman Club. In his leisure time Donald enjoyed traveling with his wife, hunting, fishing, his pets, playing competitive pool, playing cards with friends, and family activities. Donald is survived by his two sons, Michael McCleary of Manchester, Donald McCleary and his wife Geri of Brookings, SD; his two daughters, Tracy Swartz and her husband Bob of Strinestown, Connie Davis of West Chester; his 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Donald was preceded in death by a daughter, Lisa Searer; his brother, William and his infant sister. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his viewing from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday and from 10 to 11 a.m., Saturday both at the Diehl Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 87 S. Main St., Mount Wolf. The service will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mount Rose Cemetery. Officiating at the service will be The Reverend Philip Nace.
