Walter Skold Obituary

Walter S. Skold
September 30, 1960 - January 20, 2018
Elkins Park
On Saturday January 20, 2018, Walter Stauffer Skold suffered a heart attack and died at Einstein Medical Center in Elkins Park, PA, where he had recently moved to be closer to his mother and sister. Previously he had lived in ME, MA, China, New York City, PA and NJ, where he was born in Longbranch on September 30, 1960.
Walter was a traveler and loved being on the road in search of his next grand adventure. For the last ten years Walter's journeys took him all across the country as he made it his life's work to document the gravesites of every poet buried in the U.S., both the well-known, like Poe and Frost, and those long forgotten after their time. He took on the name Dead Poet Guy and traveled around in Dedgar the Poemobile, a large van outfitted with solar panels and original artwork. Dedgar doubled as his office, his bed, and his beloved traveling companion—alongside Raven, a large stuffed jaguar, a dashboard bobblehead of Edgar Allan Poe, and a harmonica always at hand.
Walter had a Bachelor's degree in history from Fordham University in New York where he first worked as a journalist. A voracious researcher (he later acquired a Master in Library and Information Science) and a lover of Freedom, he relished in exposing injustices around the world. He reported from Tiananmen Square, joined humanitarian efforts in Tibet, welcomed and supported the Lost Boys from Sudan, fought for the freedom of press in Cuba, and much more. These pursuits were also inspired by the faith he found in Jesus Christ, which had led to his baptism as a young man in 1979. This faith in the good news of Christ was expressed in his many acts of love for his neighbor near and far, and was a significant part of his life-long pursuit for Truth.
Walter always took special delight in unearthing those stories overlooked by most, among them the claim that Henry Livingston, Jr. was the true author of the children's poem popularly known as "The Night Before Christmas." Walter was the first to publish a version of this text in Livingston's name in 2011. It was this concern for the overlooked that first fueled a small personal hobby of tracking and visiting local poets' graves. However, he soon recognized the magnitude of the task set before him and The Dead Poets Society was born. With each trip his list got longer, and he eventually took to an audacious goal: 500 graves of American poets. He made it to 627, at least.
The Dead Poet Guy recorded his travels on his website deadpoets.typepad.com and involved hundreds of people across the country, poets and passengers alike, as he planned graveside readings, held interviews, and drew attention to the fascinating lives, and deaths, of his subjects. He filmed and photographed much of his journey and compiled some of his work into a short documentary, "Live From The Grave With Dedgar" (vimeo.com/185808437), which he hoped to eventually turn into a full-length documentary. This was meant to follow his first documentary, "One Tuesday Morning," produced in 2013 about the Freeport Flag Ladies (vimeo.com/ondemand/onetuesdaymorning). Unfinished projects include publishing a book of his own poetry and curating a museum of original artwork and interesting items found at gravesites.
As a lasting legacy, Walter founded Dead Poet's Remembrance Day, observed on the Sunday closest to October 7th (the date of Poe's demise), to educate communities about their literary history. He envisioned people going out on this day every year to visit poets' graves, read their poetry and celebrate their contributions.
He also developed what he called "Tombstone Art," a form of installation art where he decorated tombstones and photographed his work. Many of these colorful photographs can be found on the Dead Poets website. His final installation will be his own. He recently collaborated with tombstone carver Michael Updike to design his own grave marker, a fitting endeavor with the son of one of Walter's great inspirations (a writer who traveled himself, with Charley).
Walter was a man of spectacle, surprise and spontaneity, who needed no reason to show up unannounced. He transformed the mundane into the fantastic and loved eliciting smiles on the faces of those around him. Waking you up with firecrackers in the morning. Appearing at your door as Santa Clause in July. Blaring Bob Dylan beside you at a red light.
Above all, Walter loved his family and was proud to be a father and grandfather. He was known to boast about his five children wherever he went, even sporting the license plate 5KDZNME for years. Walter Stauffer Skold is survived by his five children, Racquel (Bradley) Stucky of Garden City, KS, Simon Skold of Las Vegas, NV, Charles Skold of Cambridge, MA, Wesley (Sarah) Adeyinka-Skold of Philadelphia, and Samuel Skold of Freeport, ME; his mother, Mary Skold of Warminster; his siblings, Robert E. (Elsie) Skold, Jr. of Centennial, CO, and Salome (Craig) Prickett of Yardley, PA; his two grandchildren; his several nephews and nieces; and the mother of his children Barbara (Richard) Bundy of Freeport, ME. He was predeceased by his father, Robert E. Skold.
There will be a celebration of life service 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Kuhner Associates Funeral Directors, Inc., 863 South George Street, York. Visitation will be 9:30-10:30 a.m. For those who can't attend, the service will be videotaped and another service in ME is being planned for the future. In lieu of flowers please donate money to:

I knew Walter at Nyack. I went to enlist him in a political cause, and I knew someone who had his name had died a couple of years ago, but I did not think it was him because Walter was political, not into poetry, when I knew him. So sorry. I had that happen last year when I went to contact an old friend of mine in IT and found out he had died in 2018. So many dying too young. RIP Walter.

Walter's fascination with poetry and with our great poets of the past was contagious. I spent many happy days with him exchanging views, reciting poems and celebrating at their graves. I was part of his first Dead Poets' Day celebration in Maine, reading Millay's "Ragged Island" at the crack of dawn on the coast with the sun coming up over the island that had been Millay's summer home and later reading "Renascence" in the Camden Public Library. I have missed him and will now continue to miss him for years to come.

I did not know Walter, but was always so pleased to see stories of his travels as the Dead Poet's Society of America founder and Ambassador. I rooted him on with a smile, grateful for his spirit of adventure. His obituary describes a man who lived well and good, and I would have liked to have met him. I will miss looking for added website features and his continued exploits in the name of poetry - both the poetry of words and the poetry in living an inspiring life. I just wanted you to know that he touched many in wonderful ways. I wish you all peace in your hearts.

Walter was that very special person who marched to a different drummer, a joyous drummer whose beat was filled with joy and exuberance. His drummer had a smile for all who crossed his path, a sense of discovery, excitement, happiness and friendship. His drummer knew how to write, how to convey the interest of the little known, the discipline of searching for the unknown, the uncommon, the unsought, and always bringing newfound interest in matters not often found by the greatest of writers. His drummer was always joyous and always welcome. His drummer was unforgettable. The world needs more drummers like Walter's drummer.

About 4 years ago I was in touch with Walter when I brought the poetry of Forman Brown to a Dead Poets remembrance day. People were intrigued by this little known poet who had studied with Robert Frost, and then went on to become a well known lyricist and performer in Hollywood. It inspired me to continue my research and eventually mount a one-man show: Forman Brown, New Hampshire's forgotten poet and puppeteer. Thank you Walter -- it would never have happened without you.

I was fortunate enough to know Walter, meeting him at the Edgar Allan Poe House in Baltimore, Maryland. He was a great man and I was very fond of him. We shared a lot of laughs and some terrific memories that I will now hold dear always. He never steered away from going out of his way for someone. I feel so blessed to have known him and will miss him dearly. I wish the world could have held on to him a bit longer, as I feel he had so much to give -- and we really need people like him on Earth. I'm glad I shared a bit of his space for as long as I could. I will miss you, Walter! You left a permanent mark on the Poe House and in my heart. See you in Valhalla.

I ran the Robert Frost Homestead state historic site for the NH state parks for over ten years. Walter was a fixture at the farm, and we became natural friends.
He would come to every presentation we had in the old barn in Derry except and unless he was on the road in search of another poet whose work and legacy needed preservation.
I take great pride in being one of the poets reading in Concord at Gibson's for one of the remembrance days, and in hosting one of those days at the Robert Frost Farm in Derry.
I'm going to miss his good nature and his glowing smile. His passion for poetry was unmistakable. I will not forget Walter Skold, and I'm happy our paths converged in a yellow wood for a little while.

January 24, 2018

My condolences to Walter's family and all who were close to him. His tireless efforts to find and keep the history of both major and minor US Poets will not be forgotten. He was such a generous and caring person.
I will never forget the trips I made with him in search of Eleanor Winthrop Vinton's grave in the late summer and fall of 2014. Vinton was the 2nd Poet Laureate of NH (1972-77), yet no one we knew or spoke with had ever heard of her or read her work. Walter was determined to find her story, her poems, and her grave. It took us several trips to three different cemeteries and several libraries to find any information on her, her poems, and finally her resting place. The poet, Jessica Purdy came with us when we finally did find and photograph Vinton's grave at Blossom Hill Cemetery in Concord NH. The three of us swept the leaves and debris from that forgotten, unkempt site and honored her as best we could. Later that day, Poet Laureate Alice Fogel read some of Vinton's poems for us at the Dead Poet's Remembrance reading we arranged at Gibson's Bookstore in Concord. Walter was so pleased that we had solved the mystery and brought her to light again. He was meticulous and persevering in keeping history alive. I will miss him and his quest.
