PINEHURST, N.C. — Mr. Joseph Grey Singletary, 79, passed away Monday, March 24, 2014, at Manor Care in Pinehurst.
He was born April 29, 1934, in Abbottsburg, N.C., the oldest son of the late Charlie Dexter Singletary and Grace Memory Singletary.
Mr. Singletary retired from CSX Railroad, where he was conductor. He served in the U. S. Army. Mr. Singletary was a Mason with Hamlet Lodge #532 and a Shriner. He had many interests over the years including horseback riding, earning a pilots license to fly small planes, motorcycling, restoring small engines, NASCAR, photography and spending time at the beach with his family. Before his illness, Mr. Singletary lived his life as if every day would be his last.
Singletary is survived by his wife, Margaret Jones Singletary; children, Joseph Grey Singletary Jr. and wife Janet of Pinebluff, Betty Grey Singletary and friend Robert Birthisel of Charlotte, and Toby Singletary Sunstrom and husband Gary of Charlotte; grandchildren, Payton Singletary, Owen Singletary, Corey Sunstrom and Meredith Sunstrom; and siblings, Mary Joyce Millson and husband David of Hamlet, John Singletary and wife Priscilla of Pittsboro, Larry Singletary and wife Priscilla of Advance, N.C. and Ginger Headen and husband Pat of Mint Hill.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday in the chapel of Watson–King Funeral Home in Rockingham with the Rev. Randy Bishop officiating.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. A private burial will follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to consider contributions to the First Baptist Church, 208 Charlotte St., Hamlet, NC 28345.
