James Odell Benton, 70, of Rockingham, N.C., passed away Thursday, May 1, 2014, at FirstHealth Hospice House in Pinehurst.

Mr. Benton was born October 14, 1943, in Hoke County, a son of the late John Lanie and Ludie Mae Todd Benton. He had served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, was a member of Highland Pines Free Will Baptist Church and had retired from Burlington Industries.

Surviving are his wife, Janice Harvey Benton of the home; children, James O. "Jimmy" Benton Jr. and wife Kim of Cordova, Tammy Taylor of Rockingham, Angela Hatley and husband George of Oakboro, Regina Benton of Oakboro and Brian Benton and wife Crystal of Hamlet; brothers, Robert L. Benton and John Larry Benton of Rockingham; sister, Jeanette McKenzie of Rockingham; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

The family will see friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday at Carter Funeral Home in Rockingham and at other times at the home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at Highland Pines Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Don Kivett and the Rev. Darwin Cook officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in Richmond County Memorial Park.
