Alexander Smith, 95, of Rockingham, N.C., went to meet his heavenly Father Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2013, at his home.

He was born in Scotland County on March 14, 1918. He was the son of the late Dozier Daniel Smith and Lillie Mae Peele Smith.

Smith was a member of East Rockingham United Methodist Church. He worked in textiles, retiring with Avondale and served in the U. S. Army during World War II with the 9th Infantry.

He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Virginia Lovin Smith of the home; children, Carol Smith Currie and Bill of Winston Salem, Tommy Smith and Wanda of Newton, JoAnn Smith Hopkins and Mike of Rockwell and Kathy Smith Moore and Jeff of Rockingham; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Jane Ayers and Johnnsie Toungate both of Indianapolis, Ind.

Funeral services will be conducted with military honors by the graveside at 2 p.m. Thursday at Richmond Memorial Park. Rev. Pat Sykes and Rev. Bill Currie will be officiating.
