HAYWOOD ERNEST WALTERS SR.

ROCKINGHAM — Haywood Ernest Walters Sr., 82, of Rockingham died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2018, surrounded by his family.

He was born Sept. 7, 1935, in Rockingham, the son of Ernest Airwood and Jennie Mae Stogner Walters.

He was a member of The Wellspring Church, a veteran of the Army, worked in the grocery business in management and was a devoted husband and father who loved his family dearly. He loved baseball and coached Little League for several years, touching many children's lives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Mathew Walters; and a son-in-law, Robert Benson.

Visitation will be 10-11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018, at Place of Grace, Rockingham. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Ernie Walters officiating. Burial will be private.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Swink Walters of the home; daughters Elissa Winters (Jeff) of Missouri, and Susan Benson and Tracey Dunlap (Robert), both of Rockingham; sons the Rev. Ernie Walters (Karen) and Mike Walters, both of Hamlet; sister Barbara Elaine Russell of Florida; a very close cousin, Danny Brown (Ellen) of Rockingham; a niece, Sandy Marsden of Florida; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and his companion "Leroy."
