MARSTON, N.C. — Mrs. Lois Hunter McKay Smith, 86, of Marston, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2014 at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.
Mrs. Smith was a lifelong member of Marston Presbyterian Church, where she was the secretary and treasurer for many years. She also led Sunday school classes as an active member of Marston Baptist Church with her husband, Claude and other family members. Mrs. Smith served as the secretary at the Marston Broom Factory for a number of years. Later, she continued her education at UNC-Pembroke where she completed her bachelor's degree and gained her teaching certificate. She then taught at Richmond Community College as the guided studies director from 1978 to 1991. Mrs. Smith enjoyed spending time in the yard as an active gardener. Her other interests included reading, sewing, cooking, shopping and trips to the beach. She adored her family and was known to her family and many friends as "Prim" or "Lois Hunter."
She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Smith.
Mrs. Smith is survived by two daughters, Beverly Smith of Chapel Hill and Claudia S. Robinette (Kenneth) of Marston; two grandchildren, Gabrielle R. Goodwin (Matt) of Rockingham and Neil Robinette (Catherine) of Pinehurst; one great-granddaughter, Madelyn Goodwin; a brother, Frank McKay (Pam) of Marston; and a nephew, Franklin McKay of Marston.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday evening at Watson–King Funeral Home in Rockingham and other times at the home.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Cole Auditorium on the campus of Richmond Community College with the Rev. Dr. Jim Ritter and the Rev. Roger Paxton officiating. Entombment will follow at Richmond Memorial Park.
