ROCKINGHAM, N.C. — Mrs. Vernelle Whitley Thomas, 80, passed away Saturday, April 5, 2014 at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.
She was born March 26, 1934 in Union County, daughter of the late Roy and Ruth Laney Whitley.
Mrs. Thomas was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church, where she was very active in WMU and with the Hospitality Committee. Her greatest loves were the relationship with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, her family, and her passion for cooking and baking to share with her friends and family.
Mrs. Thomas is survived by her husband of 60 years, Wayne Thomas of the home; children, Terry Boyce (Jim) of Matthews, Tim Thomas (Darlene) of Sylva, and Susan Durrette (Leland) of Concord; grandchildren, Becky Boyce, Phillip Boyce, Tiffany Cash, Adrian Thomas, Daniel Durrette, and Andrew Durrette; great grandchildren, Gavin Lanning and Brendan Lanning; and a brother, David Elmer Whitley of Monroe.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Mt. Olive Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m.Tuesday at Mt. Olive Baptist Church with Rev. Bryan Blackwell and Rev. Delane Burris officiating. Entombment will follow in the mausoleum at Richmond Memorial Park.
