Beverly Poe McCain of 13223 Fairfax Road, Hagerstown, Maryland, passed into the arms of her Lord and Savior on the beautiful, sunny morning of Saturday, July 12, 2014 at her home in the presence of her family.

Born Sunday, June 15, 1952 in Rockingham, N.C., she is the daughter of William Avery Poe and Ann Steadman Poe of Rockingham and the wife of David O. McCain.

Bev's childhood was filled with joy, love, support and fun with her wonderful family. After attending school in Rockingham, she graduated from Meredith College in 1974 with a bachelor of science degree in sociology. Following graduation, she and David were married in Rockingham, then joining him in Grand Blanc, Mich. to begin a marvelous and loving life, partnership and friendship together.

In 1977, Bev and Dave moved to Hagerstown. In 1980, they moved to Horbury, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom, returning to Hagerstown in 1984. Katherine and Abby came along in the '90s to complete our loving family. All along the way, Bev provided guidance, support and encouragement for all we did in business, social, education, hobbies and faith.

Though very much a contemporary woman, she placed enormous value on traditions for all of life. Her small stature understated her many strengths. She had an unparalleled love for the beauties of life and the goodness of God's creation. Bev portrayed a grace and dignity that was evidence of her upbringings, her family and her community. Her softspokenness and infectious smile belied the competence, confidence and competitiveness with which she approached life, its wonders, its joys and its challenges.

Her approach to life, its duties and tasks, was always with a positive attitude. She was an inspiration, light and friend to those she met and never sought the spotlight for her works. True happiness abounded within her and radiated to those about her. Bev enjoyed gardening at her Hagerstown home, "putzing" about the farms in Alabama, activities with her girls, family North Carolina beach trips and running the dogs. She was a marvelous and accomplished homemaker, mother and wife, always a steady influence in our life. She was a caring and steadfast friend.

Bev was a lifelong member of Rockingham United Methodist Church, attended and supported John Wesley in Hagerstown, a member of Fountainhead Country Club, Maryland Symphony Guild, a previous board member of Hagerstown Day Nursery, Hagerstown Garden Club and other community organizations.

She is survived by her husband David; and daughters, Mary Katherine and Abigail Marie as well as her parents. This year recognizes the 40th year of Bev's loving marriage with David.

Family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North Hagerstown, Md.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at John Wesley United Methodist Church, 129 North Potomac St., Hagerstown, Md. with the Rev. Pat Ricker and Dr. Belon Friday of Birmingham presiding.

Interment will be at a later date in the McCain family plot in the Ashville, Ala. Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial donations be made to John Wesley United Methodist Church, Hagerstown or to Mercy Health Foundation/Segall Institute, 301 St. Paul Place, Baltimore, MD 21202, Attn: Heidi Minken.
