HAMLET, N.C. — Thomas Franklin "Tommy" Halyburton, 64, of Hamlet passed away Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at his home.
Tommy was a graduate of Hamlet High School and attended East Carolina University. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Hamlet. He was retired with CSX Railroad. Tommy was a licensed insurance agent for many years and was a contract specialist with the McLaurin Center in Hamlet for several years. He was a member of the Hamlet Rotary Club and was presently serving as past president. He loved sports, especially playing golf. Many will remember Tommy playing Santa Claus for children at Christmas time.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Reed Halyburton Sr. of Hamlet; and stepfather, Truett Freeman of Bladenboro, N.C.
Tommy is survived by his wife, Donna Halyburton; his mother, Martilla H. Freeman of Bladenboro; stepsons, Lee Jenkins of Rocky Mount and Brian Jenkins (Lori) of Rockingham; two grandchildren, Hailey Jenkins and Mason Jenkins; a brother, Robert Halyburton (Cheryl Southworth) of Fort Mill, S.C.; a sister, Jennifer McDuffie (Greg) of Charlottesville, Va.; stepsisters, Lynda Thompson (Bill) of Hallsboro, N.C. and Carole Simmons (Steve) of Bladenboro; and a number of nieces.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday at First Baptist Church in Hamlet with the Rev. Randy Bishop officiating. Interment will follow in Mary Love Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. prior to the service at the church and other times at the home.
