George Apostol, 74, was born in Gonzales, CA on May 15, 1939 to parents Lorenzo and Berna Apostol. He passed away peacefully at his home in Yuma, AZ on Thursday, December 5, 2013.
George attended school in El Centro, CA and married Adelaida (Della) Viramontes Apostol on June 16, 1959. They made their home in Yuma, AZ in 1962. George was a migrant farmworker for several years, working in all fruit and produce farms up and down the California coast. He worked his way to the state government at the Department of Economic Security and then Project PPEP as a social worker developing jobs for the unemployed. A certified instructor and abuse counselor, he also worked on behalf of the Indian Nations directing their educational programs. As an entrepreneur, he owned and operated Apostol Income Tax Services, processing returns for many families in Yuma.
George had a tremendous zest for life and loved to sing and dance and spend festive times with family and friends. He performed regularly with Mariachi bands and carried his guitar wherever he went. He loved to travel and had a love for western movies. George is survived by 4 children; Virginia, Celia, George Jr, and Javier; 15 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren, along with 5 sisters and 3 brothers and numerous nieces and nephews. He loved his family dearly.
Visitation is scheduled from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at Funeraria del Angel Chapel, 795 W 28th St, Yuma on Thursday, December 12. Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 13, 2013 at Immaculate Conception Church, with burial set for 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at Desert Lawn. Pallbearers: Sam Hernandez, Andre Apostol, Xavier Apostol, Brian Braden, Manuel Palma Jr., Patrick Brown III. Honorary Pallbearers: Thomas Corpuz, Anthony Silvestre
