Joan M. Laudenslager(1933 - 2014)

Joan M. Laudenslager, 80, passed away on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at home in Yuma, AZ She was born June 2, 1933 in Allentown, Pennsylvania, to Margaret Marie Pauley Laudenslager and Clarence Albert Laudenslager. Joan attended high school and graduated in 1951, then received her Bachelors in Education from Kutztown State Teachers College in 1956. She received her Masters in Education from Temple University in 1960, and then did post graduate work at University of Georgia in 1974. Joan taught ESL classes for adults for Yuma School District One. She worked at San Luis Middle School as a 7th and 8th grade teacher, assistant principal then retired as principal in June of 2000. Prior to that, she taught at Gadsden School District and Yuma County Career Education Program. She planned, organized and taught the original gifted program for Santa Fe, New Mexico. While in Georgia, she was director of training for teachers of gifted children at the University of Georgia. Joan began her teaching career in the Allentown School District in 1956 by teaching 4th grade and then teaching at the Opportunity Program for Gifted Children. Before teaching, she worked at Hess Brothers Department Store in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Joan owned, handled, showed, trained, coursed and bred both feathered and smooth varieties of Salukis, "The royal dog of Egypt". Her goal was to promote, improve and champion this legendary breed of dog. Dog shows took her all over the U.S. More than a dozen of her breeding took championships both in the dog show ring and coursing grounds under the name of "JEMEL Hounds". Her antiquing was a continuation of collecting and appreciating that was instilled by her parents. Joan is survived by her good friends, neighbors, co-workers and her "kids": dogs; Herbie, Jupiter, Pepper and cat; Heidi. Memorial service will be held at Yuma Mortuary on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at 1pm. Remains will be spread with her dogs' ashes.
