Patricia Lou (Early) Sommers, 81, passed away Sunday, August 1, 2010 after a long battle with breast cancer. She was born in Fargo, ND on July 2, 1929. She grew up in West Fargo, ND, and Billings, MT. Before marrying September 1, 1949 to her love Faris, she studied in college to be a dietitian.
Pat dedicated her life to her four children and husband creating the best possible environment for all to flourish creating a smooth life where kids could be kids, feeling safe and cared for. She was the mom who would stay up all night while you were sick, sometimes traveling for medical care. A mom everyone dreams of, the one who made treats to come home to after school. She encouraged experiencing any interesting endeavor. Ever the chauffeur, she piled miles on the car taking everyone to school, 4-H, chorus, band, Boy Scouts, music lessons, dance, and play rehearsals. She was the room mother, the mother who volunteered at school, the PTA mom who was loved by all the kids. She made sure that school children did not go without at Christmas. She also taught Sunday school in Somerton. She stressed education making college a choice. She was always there for everyone, never judging, but listening and supporting in a positive way to help them get through whatever they faced.
Her grandchildren adored her for whistling songs, touching her tongue to her nose, cooking good food, coloring, and generally finding thoroughly entertaining things to do. She seemed to have magnetic charisma with all children. They would gravitate to her smiling, waving, and hugging her though she didn't know them.
Besides that, she was able to step in and take over as office manager for Producers Livestock Marketing Assoc. when needed. She was the wife who was instrumental in the success of her husband's career. Together they made decisions to support good causes like Smile Train, and sponsoring Christian children.
She was a member of the Sweet Adelines for 40 years, singing baritone in the chorus and various quartets. As group leader, she wrote scripts for shows, made and designed costumes, and helped with choreography. In town, she sang for many functions and also traveled extensively to conventions all over the U.S.
While volunteering for the Assistance League of Yuma, she worked in the shop stocking, pricing, and selling items. She especially loved shopping for school children, and helping them choose clothing.
In a nutshell, she was a giving, kind woman. Better known to us as the best mom in the whole world.
She was preceded in death by her father, William Martin Early, mother, Vada Louise (Good) Early; husband, Faris Franklin Sommers.
She is survived by sons, Tim, Scott (Delaine), Frank Sommers; daughter, Lynn (Michael) Shoop; grandsons, Nathan (Rocio), Aaron (Rebecca), and Matthew Shoop (Fiancé Vanessa), and Richard (Angie) Hanen; great-grandson, Noah Shoop; brother in-law, Arlen (Sandy) Sommers; sister in-law, Betty Sommers.

Aunt Pat's write up was a perfect characterization of her love and contribution to us all. She always had a can do attitude, witty sense of humor, was always welcoming, and never hesitated when needed. She was one of those rare people who never had a negative thing to say about anyone. If we all strived to be half the woman she was the world would be a much better place. You know Dave and I are here if you need us; you are in our thoughts and prayers.
We love you all,
Cathy and Dave Platt

We will always remember all the great times in our life with you, grandma. From swimming/checking the chemicals in the pool to sitting in the kitchen at the "kids table" coloring Easter eggs. As everyone will know from reading your summarized life story you truly made things wonderful for all around you. You will always be a saint in our eyes. Still fun as ever even though you wouldn't run around the block with me a few weeks ago.
Love always, Aaron and Rebecca
P.S. Tell grandpa and Rebecca's grandparents we love them, thinking of them all the time.
