Thelma Rita Aguerro, 92, died May 29, 2009 in Yuma.
Thelma was born on July 4, 1916 to Hippah Mary Burns and Wilfred Aguerro, at Fort Yuma Indian Reservation, California. She attended Fort Yuma Boarding School and Sherman Indian High School in Riverside, California.
She married Leigh Emerson in the early 1930's at the St. Thomas Indian Mission.
Thelma is survived by her children, Christine Theresa Emerson and Arlie C. Emerson; grandsons, Gary Leigh Hunter, Daniel James Hunter, Christopher Michael Emerson Sr., Rodney Wayne Hunter Sr., and Jamison Leon Emerson; great-grandchildren, Alyssa Erin Hunter, Ashley Theresa Hunter, Christopher Michael Emerson Jr., Roxanne James Hunter, Danielle Diane Hunter, Rodney Wayne Hunter Jr., Jacob Ethan Emerson, Ramona Denise Emerson, and Cynthia Lavena Hope Emerson; and many numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Maxine Lena Emerson Hunter; granddaughter, Ramona Hope Emerson; brother, Charles Aguerro; and sisters, Lavina Aguerro Wilson and Daisy Aguerro.
Viewing will be held at Funeraria Del Angel (formerly Kammann Mortuary), 795 W. 28th St., on Thursday, June 4, 2009 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Mass will follow at St. Thomas Indian Mission Church, followed by a tribal ceremonial rites at the Quechan Big House. Cremation will take place at the Quechan Cemetery on Saturday, June 6, 2009 at 5 a.m. Father Monohan will officiate.
