David Ross Rodney

1919 - 2013 | Obituary Condolences
David Ross Rodney, 93, of Yuma, Arizona passed away Friday March 15, 2013. Ross was born May 15, 1919 in Jane, Missouri as one of nine children.

David graduated from the University of Missouri in 1941 where he met and married Helen Singer Rodney, his wife of 65 years. He entered World War II as a Captain in the U.S. Army Chemical Corp. He served with General George Patton during the invasions of Sicily and southern Italy where he earned a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart.

Following the war Ross attended Ohio State University where he received his Master's Degree and Doctorate in Horticulture. He then worked for Cornell University in Geneva, New York, the University of California in Riverside, California before becoming a professor for the University of Arizona at the Citrus Experimental Farm in Yuma in 1957.

Ross served as a past President for the Yuma Rotary Club, was a long time member of First Presbyterian Church, and a member of the Native Plant Society. Ross is preceded in death by his wife Helen Rodney and seven older sisters. He is survived by his younger sister, Virginia Meigs of Bellevue, Washington; three sons, Jim Rodney (Kathy) of Yuma, Steve Rodney (Chase) of Tucson, Arizona, Doug Rodney (Rhonda) of Artesia, New Mexico; eight grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
