Geraldine "Gerrie" Godfrey Furrow

1920 - 2013 | Obituary Condolences
Geraldine "Gerrie" Godfrey Furrow Obituary
Geraldine Godfrey Furrow, a 4th generation Yuma native, passed away at her home Monday, December 2, 2013 with her family by her side. Born October 8, 1920 to Arthur and Matilda Godfrey, Gerri attended all the local schools. As a teen, she enjoyed working at various local businesses including a new and improved Yuma Theater, as she would say!

After graduation from Yuma Union High School, Gerrie moved to San Diego to continue her education. When WWII broke out, Gerrie decided to go to work for Consolidated Air in San Diego where she met the love of her life, Al Furrow. They were married in 1944 and after the war decided to move to Yuma and start their family and careers.

Gerrie enjoyed a 31 year career with the City of Yuma, working at City Hall for the Street Department and the Public Works Division. Throughout the years Gerrie possessed an amazing amount of Faith in God. A devout lifelong Catholic, she walked door to door in the 1950s helping to ensure the funding and building of the new St. Francis Parish. She continued her work in the church her entire life, even visiting the sick and homebound with Sister Patrice well into her 90s.

Gerrie also possessed a special quality of love of family. She was so proud of her 5 grandchildren. She thoroughly enjoyed seeing them grow to adulthood as she shared so many events with them as they were growing up. She always had time for each one of them. Family get togethers were special, with the annual San Diego Beach being the tops.

Lastly, and maybe the most importantly, was that Gerrie possessed a remarkable sense of unselfishness. She would always make sure everyone was served before herself and always strived to help the less fortunate. Her actions will never be forgotten.

Gerrie was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Matilda; and her husband of 65 years, Al. She is survived by her two sons, Art (Suzanne) Furrow of Tempe, AZ and Kent (Terri) Furrow of Yuma; grandchildren, Scott (Colleen) Furrow of Ahwatukee, AZ, Amy Furrow of Tempe, AZ, Aaron (Mindy) Furrow of Clovis, NM, Janell (Gina) Furrow of Albuquerque, NM, and Heidi (Joseph) Sanchez of Albuquerque, NM, and 6 great grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Madison, Sophie, Mia, Hadley, Jake and two on the way.

Viewing is Thursday, December 5, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Rosary at 6:00 p.m. at Johnson Mortuary, 1415 S 1st Avenue, Yuma. Funeral services are on Friday, December 6, 2013 at 12:30 p.m. at Immaculate Conception, 505 S. Avenue B, Yuma. Pallbearers are Gerrie's 5 grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers are Gary Moody, Michael Badgley, Pete Deprosperis and Richard Elliott.

A special Thank You to the Franciscan Sisters for their enduring friendship and spiritual guidance, the staff of Hospice of Yuma for their special care, and to Gerrie's wonderful caregiver, Ms. Gigi, for her special love and care for our Mother.
