Norman McCauley Obituary

Norman McCauley
December 10, 1947 - January 17, 2016

Norman Nelson "El Guapo" McCauley, age 68, passed away unexpectedly in Quartzsite, Arizona on January 17, 2016. He was born December 10, 1947 in Toledo, Oregon to Keith and Fern McCauley.

He served in the Army during the Vietnam War and was awarded the Purple Heart after his plane was shot down. He retired in 2006, after 22 years with the US Postal Service.

He was a jack of all trades, loyal friend, hard worker, witty, and kind. He enjoyed making jokes, telling stories, hiking, and Studebakers. Most of all, he loved his friends and family and his role as "El Guapo" (Grandpa).

He is survived by Leslie - his loving wife of 41 years, his daughters Jillian (and her husband Sean Ludden), Erin (and her fiancé Ben Dunn), his granddaughters Avelyn and Hadley, his goddaughter Becky Juarez, and four sisters Genny Yates, Janet Mason, Carole Anderson, and Liz DiVergigelis.

An informal memorial gathering will take place at a later date. Instead of flowers, the family hopes that you will follow Norm's example and perform an unexpected and unsolicited act of kindness in his name.

RIP, Norm. He & I were best friends from AIT at Ft. Huachuca through two years at the 225th in Vietnam, where we were cubical mates. I miss him terribly.

I served with Norm 1968 - 1969 with the 225th Aviation Company. As a Radio operator I was earth bound, but, Norm, being an elite Flight observer be-friended me,
shared his wonderful world view and sense of humor, and made it possible to take a leave to Japan with him. He was a brilliant observer, both in his job and in life. My condolences to Norm's family and friends, he is forever our great unforgettable brave soldier and gentleman.

Dear Family of Norm
I served with Norm in Army training for Mohawks prior to going to VN. Norm was a good friend. He was honest, respected by all and proved to be an awesome soldier and airman. We have great memories of our time with Norm and we want the family to know how much Norm was admired for the man he was in tough situations. We join in mourning your loss and we rest on the promise that we will see him again.

He said to me:
"We have something to learn from everyone"
"It doesn't have to be perfect; no one will see that" and
"You look good with a macaroni hat."

We had so much more to learn from Norm, still.

So sorry for your loss, truly a loss for anyone that has ever known Norm. I'm proud to to say I had Norm as a friend,co-worker, and Fellow Car Guy. He was one of the hardest people to connect with because he was always off someplace doing almost anything imaginable. Whatever Norm did,he gave it 100 percent, and I figure he pretty much got as much out of life as anyone I've ever known. Always remembered !!!

Hello,
I am so sad to hear about Norm's passing; it was too soon.
I was with him in Vietnam at the 225th in 1969; I think I was one class behind Norm, Steve and Larry. I briefly met him on a couple trips when he traveled through Portland Oregon; he got me to join the OV-1 Mohawk Association. We met a few times at reunions.
After Norm was shot down on his mission in the Mohawk, he actually went down again. After Norm ejected from the Mohawk, a Huey helicopter rescued him; it was taking heavy fire and crashed landed; another Huey rescued him again.
I had planned on making a trip to see him in the next year or two; I will now have to just remember the good times.
I wish his family well.
Loren
