1934 - 2013 Obituary Condolences
Velma ""Nanny"" Owens Obituary
Velma Owens, 79, passed away on Thursday, December 12, 2013 in Yuma, AZ. She was born on January 8, 1934 in Checotah, OK to Nute and Margie Shepherd.

Velma moved to Yuma in 1954 where she met her husband, George Owens, who she later married in 1955.

Involved in sports throughout her entire life, Velma was a fast pitch softball player for numerous teams including A&A Body Shop.

She worked in citrus for over 20 years and became the first woman supervisor for a packing house in Arizona.

She dedicated her life to family and was known throughout our home as Nanny. She always took care of everyone and no matter what she made sure to have hot biscuits and gravy in the morning. She will continue to be a role model for our entire family.

Velma is survived by her husband of 58 years, George W. Owens; children, Bobbie Lemp and husband David H. Lemp, Gay Hetrick and George M. Owens and wife Amberly Davis-Owens; grandchildren David A. Lemp, Jessica Gentile and husband Jonathan Gentile, Kyle Owens, Taylor Owens and Cierra Hetrick; great-grandchildren Jonathan Gentile and Jameson Gentile; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

Velma was preceded in death by her parents, siblings and daughter, Rita Owens.

Her greatest pleasures were her grandchildren, horses, basketball, winning at cards and her dog, Amy.

Family has elected to have a private memorial and requests only thoughts and prayers.
