John Robert Roll Obituary
John Robert Roll, a resident of Newport, Oregon passed from this life on Saturday, December 27, 2013, freeing his spirit from the cancer that had claimed his earthly body. He was at home with his loving wife Nina by his side.
John was born December 23, 1942 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Felix D. and Janet A. Roll. The family moved to Yuma, AZ in 1952, where John graduated from Yuma Union High School in 1961.He attended NAU where he graduated in 1965 with a BS in Business Marketing. John married Nanci Corzine in 19565. They later divorced. They had two daughters, Sandra Kay, born in 1968 and Patricia Ann, born in 1970. John started his work career in 1965 at Allis Chalmers Corp., Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In 1966 he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force serving until 1970. He was honorably discharged from the Air Force with the rank of Captain. During his enlistment, he served as a Base Aircraft Maintenance Officer at Hill Air Force Base in Utah.
After his discharge from the Air Force, John served in management positions with several farm equipment companies in the southwest United States. He owned and operated his own commodity brokerage and real estate company prior to going to work for the Arizona Public Service. He was working in Cottonwood, AZ. When he met and married Nina Pollock, becoming a husband and the stepfather of her daughter, Angela. Their son, Rockne was born of this union in 1987 in Miami, AZ.
John and his family moved to the great Pacific Northwest in 1994 where John went to work for Pacific Power Company as an electrical engineering estimator in Albany, Oregon. He moved to the Lincoln City office as a District Estimator in 1997. Dreams of living on the beautiful Oregon Coast had come true. John retired from PP&L in 2007. In Arizona, John was an avid horseman, becoming a member of the Yuma County Sheriff's Posse and the Gila Co. Sheriff's Posse. John was a Cub Scout Leader and coach for son Rockne's Boys and Girls Club baseball teams in Lebanon. He was a member of the American Legion Newport Post 116 and the Big Timber Rifle and Pistol Club. He and Nina enjoyed traveling and spent many vacations at their favorite spot in Cabo San Lucas, Baja California. They spent their 25th anniversary in Hawaii in 2010.
John is survived by his wife, Nina; son, Rockne of Newport, OR; daughters, Sandi (David) Tidwell of Bishop, CA, Patti (Rob) Lord of San Francisco, CA, Angela (David) Warner of Woodland, WA; grandchildren, Isaac, Nathan, Emma, Samantha, Harper, and West; sister, Beth Ann (Jack) Prather of Yuma, AZ; brother-in-law, Roger Rieke of Clinton, IA; nephews, Raymond (Cheryl) Prather of Scottsdale, AZ, and Richard (Caroline) Prather of Kingman, AZ; niece, Debera Daugherty of Kingman, AZ; six great nieces and nephews.
A remembrance gathering is being held on Saturday, January 18, 2014 at Bateman Funeral Home Chapel in Newport, Oregon. A reception will follow. The family requests that memorial donations be made to cancer research or treatment foundations of your choice.
