Pat Goebel Obituary

Pat Phillip Goebel

CROOKSVILLE: Pat Phillip Goebel, 72, of Crooksville, Ohio passed away peacefully at 1:41 P.M. Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at Genesis Morrison House in Zanesville, following a four-month illness.

He was born February 22, 1944 in Chillicothe, the third son of the late Ernie and Leora Hartley Goebel.

Pat was a 1962 graduate of Chillicothe High School. Following graduation, he attended Ohio University in Athens and Chillicothe, and was later was a 1967 Cum Laude graduate of the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. In 1968, Pat became a licensed funeral director and embalmer in the state of Ohio after having served his apprenticeship at Schoedinger Funeral Service in Columbus. For five years following his licensure, he worked as a contract telephone lineman for Harris-McBurney Company in Ohio and Florida. In 1974, he purchased the former Fred L. Cannon Funeral Home in Crooksville. At that point, he amended the corporate name to Goebel Funeral Home, fulfilling his dream of owning and operating his own funeral home, where he would serve the families of the surrounding communities for the next 42 years. In 1975, Pat was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Perry County Metropolitan Housing Authority where he served as Chairman. Plus, he served as a board member of North Valley Bank from 1989-2007.

Pat was an active and devoted member of Church of The Atonement Catholic Church in Crooksville where he served as Eucharistic minister, lector and usher. He is a current member of the Ohio Funeral Directors Association, National Funeral Directors Association, forty-year member of the Peerless Lodge 591 F. & A.M. in Crooksville, Doric Lodge 172 F. & A.M. in Deavertown, Amrou Grotto in Zanesville, 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus MacGahan Council 1065 in New Lexington, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Bishop Fenwick's Assembly in Lancaster, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks 509 in New Lexington, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2070 in New Lexington, Life Member of the Ohio Gun Collectors' Association, a benefactor member of the National Rifle Association, and Scottish Rite Valley of Cambridge, 32 Degree.

He deeply enjoyed hunting, fishing, many outdoor activities and was an avid and expert gun collector. Each year, he and Dorothy hosted a deer camp for friends and family. His quest for knowledge led him to read countless books, magazines and newspapers. Pat was a self-taught carpenter who, over the last 42 years, has completely renovated and modernized his funeral home building. With the help of his late friend Bob Higgins, he designed and built his dream home known as "The Barn".

Pat is survived by his wife, friend and workmate of 33 years, Dorothy I. Harbaugh Goebel whom he married, July 13, 1982. He is the loving and devoted father of Amy and Gregg Hanner of Dublin and Julie Goebel and her partner, Beth Puleo, of Columbus. He is survived by his younger brother, Jerry and Janet Goebel of Lawrenceville, Georgia; his grandsons, Shane Harkless of Chillicothe and Cody and Angel Harkless of Circleville; his darling great-grandchildren, Landon, Ava and Chloe Harkless. In addition, he is survived by his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Linda Goebel of Simsbury, Connecticut, Vicki Goebel of Columbus, Diane and John Rodgers of Crooksville, David and Mary Harbaugh of Morgantown, West Virginia, Donald Harbaugh of Columbus and Debbie and Tim McLain of Zanesville, his two special cousins, Maria Miller and Jeff (Tammy) Goebel all of Chillicothe and numerous nieces and nephews. Pat is also survived by his faithful and loyal employees, Doug (Missy) Lundell, Jim Hardy and Sandy Parker, Kyle Eveland and Mackenzie Roop. Furthermore, he is survived by his rescues and furry babies, Maurice, Jackson, Max, Foxy, Spook, Buddy, Lovey, Sissy, Baby Girl, Big White, Gray Face, Allie, Scratch, Luke and Irish. The list of Pat's close and dear friends is too endless to name but know that he loved all of you and treasured your friendship.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Tim Goebel and Mike Goebel and many close friends.

Dorothy,

What a shock to read of Pat's passing. I often think about the two of you and share with others the great job you did as Funeral Directors. I referred to your work as art in body preparation. I always enjoyed working with you as you were ultimate professionals and very supportive of me. May the Crooksville Community reach out to you in your loss and the Holy Spirit comfort you in the days ahead.
