Richard H. Welker
ZANESVILLE: Richard H. Welker, 88, of Zanesville, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at Autumn Healthcare, surrounded by his loved ones, following a short illness.
Richard was born October 1, 1924 in Lima, Ohio the son of the late Stanley and Ruth Huffer Welker.
A graduate of Lima Senior High School in 1943, he immediately entered the United States Army
and within one year of graduating from high school was a medical technician in WW II, spending most of his time in Northern France. After the war, Richard graduated from the Cincinnati College of Embalming. He spent 50 years as a licensed embalmer and funeral director, working in Columbus, Lima and Zanesville, retiring from DeLong and Baker Funeral Home. He was a member of the Central Trinity United Methodist Church.
Richard was a dedicated Democrat who cared deeply about people and the government. In his later years, he was a frequent contributor to the "Letters to the Editor" in the Zanesville Times Recorder. He was also an avid cat lover.
He will be fondly remembered by his loved ones and friends as someone who was always happy. Dick liked to play cards, read and loved to clean up the kitchen after gatherings. He also enjoyed traveling with Barb his wife, especially to Gatlinburg and Myrtle Beach and loved his grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald and Billy and his son Chris Kirby.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Barbara J. Welker, sons, Steve (Judi) Welker and Doug (Brenda) Welker, daughters Cathy (Scott) McKinley and Susan (Mark) Harpell, 10 grandchildren Jason and Jered Kirby, Jenna Ackerman, Doug Welker, Brandon Buck, Nikki Tracey, Erika Harpell, Amber Welker Hannig, Anne McKinley, Ryan McKinley along with 10 great grandchildren.
Friends may call at the DeLong-Baker & Lanning Funeral Home on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm. and from 10:00 am to ll:00 am Wednesday. Services will be held at the funeral home at 11:00 am Wednesday with Rev. Tom England officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Park. Donations may be made to Central Trinity United Methodist Church or the Muskingum County Animal Shelter.
