Marjorie Joann Downing

ZANESVILLE: Marjorie Joann Downing, of Zanesville, died at 5:55 a.m. on Friday, June 28, 2013 at Genesis Hospice & Palliative Care following a 15 month battle with liver cancer.

Joann was born in New Concord on April 19, 1933, the daughter of the late Asa O. and Geneva McCall Tom. She was a 1951 graduate of Lash High School and worked for several years as receptionist for the late Dr. W.W. Renner. Later she owned and operated Grandma's Country Store, retiring in 1998. She had a beaming smile and always spoke a kind word. Her lifetime love of music and beautiful soprano voice often made her a featured soloist.

She was an active member of Central Trinity United Methodist Church, having served on or chaired many boards and committees. She sang in the Chancel Choir for more than 60 years. Joann was a member of Laura Chapter Ohio Eastern Star, The Thursday Music Club, Night-Out-For Mothers C.C.L. and was an avid Teddy Bear Collector.

Her life revolved around family and church, and her grandchildren were a very special blessing. She was an excellent cook and baker, and enjoyed entertaining them, especially baking Christmas Cookies with the granddaughters.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Jack Downing; two sons, Dr. Jeff (Stephanie) Downing; Joel (Marian) Downing; one daughter, Judi (Bruce) Sindeldecker, all of Zanesville; 21 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and one cousin, Marjorie White of Zanesville.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant son, John Alan Downing, who died in 1954.

Friends may call from 1-7 p.m. on Monday, July 1, 2013 at THE SNOUFFER FUNERAL HOME, 1150 WEST MILITARY ROAD, ZANESVILLE and one hour prior to services at the church. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at Central Trinity United Methodist Church, 62 South 7th Street, Zanesville where the Rev. Charles Titko, Pastor Emeritus, will officiate. Joann will be laid to rest in Zanesville Memorial Park Cemetery.
