Mary Hettich

CORNING: Mary Hettich, age 92, of Corning, Ohio, entered Eternal life on Monday, August 13, 2012. Born June 12, 1920, in The Plains, Ohio, she was one of 11 children born to the late James and Theresa Barrett who emigrated from Hungary.

Mary was very proud of her Hungarian heritage. She graduated from Corning, OH high school in 1938, excelling academically and was a star basketball player on the Corning Railroaders girls' basketball team. After graduation, she married the love of her life, Albert B. (Dick) Hettich, Jr., on December 24, 1938.

Nothing was more important to Mary than her family. They have many special memories of spending every Christmas together. To her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she was lovingly known as Grandma, Grandma Corning, or Mama Corning. She loved to cook and bake for her family. Whatever their favorite food was, it was always ready when they came to visit. Her homemade beef and noodles and berry pies were always the first to go at the annual Barrett family reunion. She loved watching all sports, especially the OSU Buckeyes football and basketball teams. And if you played euchre with her, you better hope she was your partner because she rarely lost. Mary was a charter member of the Corning FOE 463 Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the Women of the Moose, Chapter 997 in Logan. She was a staunch Democrat and because of her volunteer work was invited to and attended President Clinton's 1st inauguration. Mary retired from Essex's Wire in Zanesville, Ohio.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mary was preceded in death by her beloved son Jerry Hettich, grandson Todd Collins, sisters Julia Ruzciska, Geneva Morrow, Elizabeth Adams, Esther Garbline, and brother Joe Barrett.

Left to treasure her memory are her children Nancy (Ray) McDaniel, Jean (Frank) Bickley, Tom (Shelley) Hettich, Linda (Rick) Hanba, and Elaine (Dave) Thompson; daughter-in-law Norma Hettich; grandchildren Mary (Glenn) Evans, Cheryl (Todd) Krist, Brant (Trisha) Collins, Melissa (Brian) Costa, Rhonda (Byron) Wortham, Tommy (Cindy) Hettich, Craig (Susan) Collins, Toni (Scott) Baum, Ricky Hanba and Jason Hanba; 17 great-grandchildren; sisters Rosie Hamrick, Irene (John) Toth, Blanche Martin, Margie Mingus; brother Jim Barrett; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. Her passing will leave an emptiness in many hearts.

Friends may call on Thursday, August 16 from 4:00-8:00 (Ladies Auxiliary service at 7:00) at the Roberts-Winegardner Funeral Home, 304 Mill Street, New Lexington, Ohio. Funeral service will be held on Friday, August 17, at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Graveside service will follow at Oakwood Cemetery, Millertown, OH.

In lieu of flowers, friends who wish may contribute in memory of Mary to Bethany United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 325, Corning, OH 43730. Obituary and online register book at www.robertsfuneralhomenewlex.com
