MANSFIELD: Francis J. "Frank" Russo, 83, of Mansfield, died July 1, 2014. He was born September 1, 1930 in Columbus and attended elementary and high school in Canton, Ohio. Serving in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, he was stationed in Japan. Upon his discharge, he attended Kent State University. Over the years, Mr. Russo worked for two finance companies and the Central Trust Bank and then moved to Mansfield in 1981 to work at Mansfield General Hospital (OhioHealth MedCentral). He retired in 1996. He has been involved in Serra Club as president and has served as Eucharistic minister. As a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, he also took Holy Communion to nursing home and assisted living residents, the hospital, and the home bound and has ushered and been a server at Mass and worked bingo. Among his community projects is the "Needy Family Program" which Frank created to provide 300 Richland County needy families with food and other necessities all year long but especially during the holidays. Mr. Russo also served on the Msgr. Dunn Foundation for Education, parish council, and Catholic Charities. He was the vice president of the Richland County Veterans Service Commission and has also been involved in the Health Board, Korean War Veterans Association, including burial detail, Commander of American Legion Post 16, Harmony House Board, Mansfield Cancer Foundation, Rose of Sharon events for scholarships, United Way, Rehab Center, Day Spring for Veterans, Area for the Aging, Knights of Columbus, Richland Newhope, and many Veteran's Day and Memorial Day parades.
Surviving are his wife Polly, whom he married September 24, 1966; daughter, Bibianne (Doug) Galuzny of Delaware; granddaughters, Clare Marie, Ana Therese, and Angelina Rose; brother-in-law, Stan Schulthies of Loveland, CO; sister-in-law, Dottie (Tom) Durant of Zanesville; four aunts; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Frank was preceded in death by his mother, Lucy Russo; five aunts; and two uncles.
Family and friends are invited to visit on Sunday, July 6, 2014 from 2-7 p.m. at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington Springmill Road, Ontario. A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Military honors will be presented by the Richland County Joint Veteran's Burial Detail at 9:15 a.m. Monday, July 7, 2014 at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church, 104 West First Street, Mansfield, OH 44902, conducted by Father Gregory Hite. A private burial will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter's Catholic Church, Korean War Veterans Association, or an organization of the donor's choice.
