NEW CONCORD: Mary B. Cunningham, age 78, of New Concord, passed away Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at Beckett House, New Concord.
She was born November 3, 1933, in Columbus, OH, the daughter of the late Fred and Bertha Keck Bernlohr. Mrs. Cunningham was a graduate of Bexley High School and Capital University, where the Bernlohr Stadium is named for her father and uncle, and where she was an outstanding female athlete, having lettered in tennis, field hockey, and as a varsity cheerleader. She later earned a masters degree from Ohio University. She taught elementary school for twenty-seven years in the East Muskingum Schools and was in a very select group of teachers named "Teacher of the Week". In the early 1970s she was a co-founder, with her good friend, Phyllis Taylor, of the New Concord Pre-school which would evolve into the Center for Child Development within the Psychology Department of Muskingum University. An avid swimmer, golfer, and skier, Mrs. Cunningham was a member of the College Drive Presbyterian Church, and many civic and professional organizations, such as New Concord R.E.NEW and the education honorary, Delta Kappa Gamma.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Cunningham was preceded in death by her brothers, William K. Bernlohr and Paul K. Bernlohr.
Survivors include her husband, Louis M. Cunningham of the home; and children, Mary Lou (Jon) Bates of New Concord, Catherine A. Cunningham (Bryan Moore) of Hilliard, William L. (Patricia) Cunningham of Leesburg, VA, and David J. (Lorraine) Cunningham of Germantown, MD; ten grandchildren, Aaron and Emily Bates, of New Concord, Ian and Brianne Moore of Hilliard, Sarah, Matthew, and Jacob Cunningham of Leesburg, VA, and Britni, Daniel, and Paul Cunningham of Germantown, MD.; and a brother, Fred K. Bernlohr of Hideaway Hills.
Visitation will be from 4 P.M. to 7 P.M. Friday, May 18 at the Mock-Miller Funeral Home, 63 West Main Street, New Concord. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, May 19 at College Drive Presbyterian Church, New Concord with Rev. Mary Jane Knapp officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the College Drive Presbyterian Church, 2 West High Street, New Concord.
