ZANESVILLE: Julia M Shumate, 92 of Zanesville, died 11:26 AM Friday, March 22, 2013 surrounded by her family at Willow Haven Care Center following a brief illness. She was born Thursday, February 10, 1921 in Zanesville, the daughter of Thomas Butryn and Helen (Kumick) Butryn. She married Arthur E. "Art" Shumate, Sr. on Saturday, June 5, 1937 who preceded her in death on Thursday, September 29, 2011.

She was a faithful member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church. Julia was a homemaker who loved to cook. She was a loving and caring wife, mother grandmother and great grandmother who cared deeply for her family.

Julia is survived by four children: Arthur & Clara Shumate, Jr. of Zanesville; Florence & Martin Hupman of Amherst; Barbara & Tom Fulkerson of Zanesville and Fred & Garnet Shumate of Zanesville; 14 grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren; 14 great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Julia was preceded in death by her husband of over 74 years: Art Shumate, Sr. one daughter and son-in-law: Mary Jean & Gregory Browning, Sr.; five sisters: Theophilia Fleece, Josephine Harding, Della Prestanski, Sophia Dayton and Frances Summers and two brothers: Joseph Butryn and Pete Butryn

Visitation will be from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM Monday, March 25, 2013 at The Hillis, Combs & Nestor Funeral Home, 935 Forest Avenue where Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 PM with Fr. Martin J. Ralko officiating. Julia will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband in Mt.Olive Cemetery.
