Arnold Ray Boggs, Jr., 44, of Akron, found peace on Tuesday, April 1, 2008. Ray passed away from complications of liver disease at Akron City Hospital while waiting for a liver transplant.
Ray was born in Cleveland, Ohio on January 7, 1964. He was the son of Dorothy Voiers (Young) and the late Arnold Ray Boggs, Sr. He graduated in 1982 from Brunswick High School. Ray earned his undergraduate degree from The University of Akron and received his Master's degree in 2004.
He is survived by his loving mother and stepfather, Ed Voiers; aunts, Brenda Guest and Wanda Young. He was preceded in death by his father, grandmother, Retha Linden, grandfather, Russell Young and great-aunt, Lessie Taylon. Special people in his life include Missy Stroup (Merkle), Judy and Lou Merkle, Tony Spadafore, David Jesse, Steve Williams, Barry Artis, John Daniels, Greg Wright, Kristi Forshey and Richard Ian Tracy.
"Mr. Boggs," as he was known to hundreds of children, was a teacher at Woodford Elementary and most recently at Portage Elementary in Barberton. Ray will be remembered for his love of learning and children, and will be missed by his students and co-workers alike. Special thanks to his fellow teachers who supported him as his health declined.
Ray's passion in life was color guard. He began spinning rifle in the eighties and never stopped designing, creating flags, drills and shows. Throughout his long battle with liver disease he never gave up the fight. He continued spreading the joy of learning, athleticism and art everywhere he traveled.
Ray was giving, forgiving and always brought a "ray" of sunshine into the lives of others. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Mideast Performance Association for many years and was well known for many championship guard awards. Ray was the Director for Collage Winterguard, which he founded 20 years ago. He passed away living life to the fullest, celebrating life, and of course watching the guard do it just One More Time!!! Ray will be remembered forever and his life celebrated by all.
Visitation hours will be held at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd., Saturday, April 5th from 4 to 8 p.m. and Sunday, April 6th from 2 to 4 p.m., with funeral services immediately following. Final resting place at Rose Hill Burial Park. It´s been 14 years since your passing. Brian and I are sitting at dinner tonight and you came to mind. We looked you up. We worked with you, Ray, many moons ago in 1988 at Red Lobster. Fond memories of you tossing pepper mills as you marched through the galley.

I'm sitting here still not believing it has really been a year that you have been gone. It seems like just yesterday you were here smiling like always. I miss you and your friendship so very much. There is not a day that goes by that you are not in my thoughts. Jamie and I frequently laugh about the things you would do. You had such an impact on my life and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for that and for all the wonderful memories I can hold on to. You will NEVER be forgotten.

Wow...I googled Ray five minutes ago just to see how my old coach and Collage had been doing. Did NOT expect to hear of his passing. Ray and I last emailed in early 2008. I twirled in the "You Betta Work" show so long ago. He probably had no idea what an effect he had on so many young women...God bless you Ray. Rest in Peace.

As days go by I wake up thinking it was just a nightmare and that you are still here on this earth, and I have come to realize that you are, maybe not physically but spiritually you have touched so many lives in so many ways. You are missed greatly, but you give peace in mind knowing that you are in a better place. My tears are not caused by sadness but caused by the gladness that I got the chance to meet a person as wonderful as you, Ray

Ray Boggs will always have a special place in the hearts and minds of the Vermilion Winter Guard. His willingness to share his knowledge, step in and give a helping hand...when we needed it, was greatly appreciated. I first knew Ray in the early 1980's when he was a member of the Brunswick guard...and I marched in V-town's first incarnation of a guard...OCGC baby! And then 20 years later he was the one to encourage us try again...we can never thank him enough for the encouragement!
He will always be a part of our program...and will be greatly missed by many.
Sending our love...

Each year I come home from Worlds and check to see how Collage faired. I was so surprised and saddened to hear of Ray's passing when I checked this year. Ray, I will always have wonderful memories of you and all your zaniness from the three years I marched Collage. You have touched more lives than you probably ever imagined!
To Ray's family and friends, my sincerest condolences. Ray will be missed by many!

I can't even explain how shocked I was to read that Ray has passed away. I would occasionally check the Collage website just to remember the joy that Collage (and Ray!) brought to my life, and I always wished I could go back and be a part of it again. They were 3 of the best years of my life. This is truly a loss to anyone who knew Ray.

Daddy Ray Ray..I haven't been able to bring myself to sign this yet but I just got home from WGI a few hours ago and you were on my mind the whole trip. These last two weeks have been so hard but like Barry said, you taught me strength both physically and mentally in guard world and in the real world. That strength is one of the greatest gifts you have given me and for that I am forever grateful. Thank you so much for everything you have done for me and taught me. You truly are one of my biggest inspirations in life and you will forever be in my heart. I miss you and I love you so much.

It was an honour to be Ray Boggs SOUTHERN friend. Ray and I met ten years ago on one of his many trips south. It was an immediate attraction of minds and wit that continued for a decade. Ray came to visit me July '07. I believe now that Ray's trip here was to tell me goodbye in his own way. Ironically I called him and left a message on his cell phone the night he died. I believe that was God working in my life or Ray one. I am glad Ray's death was quick and that he suffers no more. What an incredibly wonderful man. The pleasure was all mine.

My sympathy to the family and close friends of Ray. I first met Ray back in 1994 when I tried out for Collage. What a blast we had that year as 'supermodels', and Ray was the best one!! His passion for the colorguard and musical arts inspired all of us that new him. I used to just watch him spin rifle and remember thinking "I hope to spin like him one day". Thank you Ray for all you have taught me... I feel honored that I knew you.

Ray Boggs is one of the most well-known names in color guard in this area as well as across the state. He taught many to appreciate the not-so-well-known art of color guard. I had the pleasure of meeting him once years ago. He also judged our group over the years and we always appreciated his helpful and encouraging comments. He will be greatly missed.

Reading through the guest book it stikes me not only how much Ray was loved by so many, but what an unnecessary loss it is. I plan on making sure my family knows I wish to be an organ donor when my time comes to hopefully keep another as special as Ray from leaving this world much too soon.

My deepest sympathies to the Boggs family. Although I was not really close to Ray during school I did have a chance to know him better after. I know that the young men and women that met, were taught, or mentored by Ray were truly blessed. Ray's ability to find and nurture someone's talents was his gift. Even though it has been 25 years since I last saw Ray his kindness, love and passion for helping others will always be a part of his memory to me.

Mr. Ray Boggs, :)
Thank you so much for being a great instructor and even more then that, what seems a short amount of time that I knew you, I have so many great memories that I will keep! I will always remember the time you told me to start crying when I thought I was getting pulled over by a cop and tell him I was lost, even though I was just a block or two away from home :)
You are deeply missed by tons! Thank you and Love you!

You were the most compassionate, giving person we have ever known. You could instantly make us laugh when we were having a bad day. Only you could make a shopping trip for support hose so funny that we laughed with you all the way home! We faced many serious issues together with you, and you showed us an unbelievable strength as you completed this journey. You will be with us always, and our love will always be with you. Keep a place for us with you as we strive to follow your examples of how to live a full life.

Ray,
You were the most intelligent, yet disorganized person I ever met! Working on MaryGrove with you was a blast and a treat. You pushed me to my limits because I wanted to be just like you! I will always remember chats in the Woodford lounge and how you made some people blush or get just a little angry. I really don't know how you had time to be so special to so many people. It seems like you were always there for me when I needed you. I was honored to be considered one of your friends. You are the best! I will miss talking with you and seeing you at our third grade meetings, vocab. class, and whenever we all have to be together. They will never be the same. "Don't you want me" will forever remind me of you as will Snoopy.
Tony, Dave, Steve-Thank you for letting me be a part of your friendship circle that day. I needed to be there and hope I provided some comfort to you knowing how well Ray was loved. He was so loved! Please contact me anytime. I would love to keep in touch.
Ray-I miss you and will love you forever! Thanks for everything!

Ray,
It has taken me until now to write this because to do so will be to admit that you are no longer with us. Friday morning I was making copies and still expected to see you come in the room with just one more thing. I just can't imagine not seeing your smiling face anymore. Last year when I started making copies for you, you always thanked me, but I felt I was the one who should thank you. You became a wonderful friend and the bond you developed with Emily was so special to her and myself. When I learned you would be her teacher this year I was so happy. I will always appreciate how you pushed her to be her very best.
Every morning coming into your classroom was a joy. No matter what kind of a morning I was having you would always put a smile on my face. You taught me so much as no matter what you were going through physically you always lived life to the fullest. You were truly a "Ray" of sunshine in my life, the lives of everyone at Portage and the lives of so many others and you will never be forgotten. I promise to keep you legacy of living life to the fullest and your love of learning alive.
To you Mom, I extend my deepest condolences. Ray was an amazing person and he will live on in our hearts forever. I pray God blesses you with peace and comfort.

I was in only one guard show that Ray instructed in HS. The marching band shows that he instructed the guard for Wadsworth will always be my favorites! I marched with another guard after HS, and will always remember Ray watching us practice one morning at a competition site. Rifle tosses that I just couldn't catch that day, he gave me instructional advice to better the toss. When I would see him at competitions he always took time to say "hello". My deepest sympathies go to all of Ray's family, friends, and Collage. Collage Winterguard- finish out the season by being strong through this difficult loss of a great friend. Make Ray proud of you, he's watching from heaven. WHS '89

To Ray's family and all his friends,
It is too difficult to believe that Ray is gone. He was so full of life, fun, laughter and adventure that he was a whirlwind of activity that was hard to keep up with. He could pack more into one day than most of us struggled to do in a week!!
I met Ray in 1995 and we became fast friends. We went to Florida in 1996 and had a blast, watching the Olympics that week, dancing and living life to the fullest. Wow. I just can't believe it. Ray has been on my mind this entire week: me remembering him and all the craziness he did, his jokes, his zest for life.I had no idea he was sick. What a kick in the teeth.
Whenever we met we always picked right up from the last point we left off on. I don't think Ray met anyone who was not an immediate friend.
Rest in Peace my friend. May the angels carry thee to thy rest.

You have been a "Ray" of sunshine in my life for 30 years. You are my soul mate and we could always read each other's minds without speaking. I know the Sun will come out tomorrow! and You can see clearly now that the rain is gone. You define best friend, best teacher and are the most giving person ever known. Whether we were twirling baton, rifle, flag or sabre or just hanging out with our graded papers and lesson plans, cooking dinner or playing with Tyler and Tori we always enjoyed the moment. Your smile and antics are with me daily and you will continue to be in my thoughts for eternity. We have never said goodbye, just hasta manana. I have always been proud of you and so have "Jutay" and "Amos".

I had the distinct privelege of working with Ray for the last ten years as part of the Norton Band Staff. Ray loved colorguard and instilled in his students that same passion for it. He was an integral part of our band staff and contributed so much to our program's success. We will miss Ray's sense of humor and his uncanny ability to frustrate and make you smile at the same time. He knew his stuff and demanded excellence in effort and results from his students. They were the better for it. We are a big family in the Norton Band program and we have lost an important part of the family. Condolences to his family and incredibly dedicated friends. If unconditional love and committment are not examples of true family, I don't know what is. God Bless.
