Charles "Chuck" King

Charles King Obituary

King, Charles "Chuck" of Palm Desert passed away on February 20, 2007 after a nine month battle with melanoma. He was born to Fred and Ella King in Huntsville, Arkansas, but moved to Southern California as an infant. He grew up in and around Fullerton, attending Fullerton High School and Fullerton Junior College before earning a baseball scholarship to Fresno State University. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity at FSU and graduated with a business degree in 1953. After serving in the Army for two years - and turning down offers to play professional baseball - he joined Chrysler Corporation in 1955. That was the beginning of an illustrious automotive career. He served in a series of assignments with Chrysler/Dodge that led him to Detroit, Chicago, San Francisco and Australia. After returning from Australia in 1972, he joined Nissan Motor Corporation in Gardena. He played a key part in the company's stateside growth, with sales more than tripling under his directorship. He retired from Nissan as the top ranking American executive in 1987. He married his wife, Marilyn, in 1958, just three months after meeting on a blind date. They enjoyed the extensive travels that came as part of Chuck's career and the numerous friends made along the way. After retirement, Chuck spent many hours cultivating friendships on and off the golf course at Ironwood Country Club in Palm Desert. He and Marilyn also spent time in Northern California at Lake Almanor. A loyal friend and family man, Chuck's sense of humor endeared him to all, including the hospice workers who helped care for him. He is survived by his wife; son, Trent King of Diamond Bar; daughter, Toni Galloro of Long Beach; two sisters, Katherine Smith of Eugene, OR and Joanne Tobey of Fullerton; two brothers, Kenneth King of Huntsville, AR and Fred King of Las Vegas, NV and three grandchildren, Max, Mia, and Sam Galloro. A private service will be held in Fullerton. In lieu of flowers, donations many be made in Chuck's memory to the Melanoma Research Foundation, 23704-5 El Toro Rd., #206, Lake Forest, CA 92630 or the Visiting Nurse Association, 42-600 Cook St., Suite 202, Palm Desert, CA 92211. Dear Marilyn and family,
I was so saddened to hear of Chuck's passing. Chuck was one of the most important influences in my automotive career. Working as a DM in Boston in the exciting Datsun days - Datsun was #1 in 1975 under Chuck's leadership! Chuck then approved me to become a dealer in a little college town in Upstate New York, Oneonta. What a ride! He always took time to call and ask "How's business, Paul?" He took time to include us for dinner at his table at all those wonderful company functions. He allowed us the pleasure of your friendship on so many exciting trips to everywehre on the face of this earth.I will miss Chuck very much, but I will forever smile at all the wonderful memories. He was the ultimate "car guy". He was the real deal. The industry has lost one of those few men who truly made a difference. He will be forever remembered by all those who were fortunate to have known him.

Marilyn what a nice guest book this is. Chuck would be so appreciative of all the wonderful comments and condolences expressed by all his many friends and family.
We will always remember him going to the ice-cream parlor with us in Grants Pass the week-end the two of you came up for one of our high school class reunions. That was the first time we got to meet him, and we were both so impressed with your Chuck. It is so nice to read here how much he was liked by so very many people. We knew our impression of him was correct---especially after getting to have lunch with the two of you a few years ago in Palm Desert.
We just know the wonderful memories that you and your family have of him will comfort you all the rest of your lives. God bless all of you. With love, Guinn & Jo

Dear Marilyn and family,

It didn't take long for our friendship to develop when Chuck joined Ironwood C.C. He would often invite me to golf with him so my rounds of golf played went quickly up. And when you're on the golf course with Chuck you never had to worry about going hungry...he always had snacks. My favorite was the Asian Pear so every once in a while even if I wasn't golfing with him he would bring me one to the golf shop. He was also good about bringing me a Strawberry Waffle from the Sunday Brunch. However, my favorite memory with Chuck was my golf trip to Lake Almanor. A place he loved and always talked about. It is nice to have these memories of Chuck plus so many others. He shared and he cared. Heartfelt sympathy, thoughts and prayers are with you during this time.

Dearest Mrs. King, Trent and my precious Toni;
Mr. King is part of wonderful memories for me during jr. high when I met Toni. Sleepovers at your home (and your dog Kelly making me sneeze!), trips to Palm Springs, running into you in Catalina! Every time Toni was driven to my house, Mrs. King came in a new Nissan....never the same car twice! I witnessed such love between the two of you, it really made an impression on me to this day. Mr. King was the ultimate gentleman...I was always in awe of him. I never saw him more proud than the night he walked Toni down the aisle to marry Mark....(but I'm sure time with his grandkids did top that!)

As you venture through this chapter in your life, I pray for God's loving arms wrapped around all of you. Mr. King left an incredible legacy... God Bless you all.
Warmly, Claudia

Marilyn, I know you don't remember me, I think we probably met briefly once or twice, but there is no end to the words of respect I had for Chuck. I was a lowly DSM when we both joined Nissan in 1972, but he made me and people like me feel that we were on his level within Nissan.
When I left in 1985 to become part of the start up crew at Hyundai, He came down to my office and said Bob, you were here when I came, I was here when you left to become a "Datsun" dealer, I was here when you returned, but I don't think I will be here when you return again. He wished me well. I saw him once more, briefly in Hawai, in the gift shop at a hotel where we were both staying. He was getting a card for your anniversary.
How bless'd I was to have worked with such a leader, role model and "class guy".

Marilyn and family – with all of our hearts we are sending you love and wishing you strength during this time. We will always remember our “Uncle Chuck” as a charming, fun, supportive, generous, loving man. We, and our beloved dad Vince, are so grateful for his life and his unwavering friendship. We find solace in knowing that our dad is back together with his good buddy now…surely playing a round of golf somewhere and laughing about old times.

Our industry has seen some dynamic individuals throughout the years. Some come, shine quickly and then disappear, while others come along and shine like no other. Such is the case of former Nissan Senior VP, C. P. “Chuck” King who sadly, passed away this week.

Chuck guided Nissan through the early “Datsun” days and helped establish a nationwide powerhouse of a dealer network. “We Are Driven” , “Buy a Datsun, plant a Tree” the establishment of NMAC, and Nissan Motor Manufacturing in America…and yes; that which most of us dreaded at the time…the name change from our venerable Datsun to Nissan all came about during Chuck’s reign. He told me that the folks in Japan told him; “You can like the new name or you can hate it…but it’s done”. During the new car show in New York in 1981...Chuck spoke from a rotating podium and officially announced the name change. He said at the time that it was appropriately uncomfortable spinning in circles while telling his dealer body of the impending change. However, as usual he handled it with class and a steady hand and made it as painless as could be. Few today remember the days of Voluntary Restraints, Domestic Content Legislation, full-recourse, no factory holdback and the painfully short inventory allocations…but all Nissan/Infinity dealers owe a great deal to pioneers like Chuck King.

As times go on it is easy to forget those who came before and carved the paths we travel upon today. Old problems fade away as we wake to deal with new ones. Next time though, when you walk into a Nissan or Infinity showroom, listen for the echoes of old friends and leaders who came before. When you do, one of those voices will be Chuck King‘s.

Farewell good friend, farewell.
