1969-2008
Jorren Hess died on June 13, 2007. He was 39 years old.
Jorren was greatly loved, respected and admired by his family, friends and all who knew him. Jorren is survived by his father and stepmother, Richard and Julie Hess; mother and stepfather, Martha and Lee Kufchak; sister and brother-in-law, Jocelyn and Jonas Menguita, and their children, Kaiona, Naya and Micah.
Jorren was born in Eugene on Feb. 6, 1969. He graduated from Aloha High School in 1988, where he was very active in his church youth group, with whom he enjoyed traveling to Mexico to help build a church, and bicycling the San Juan Islands.
Jorren earned a degree from the University of Oregon. He had a double major in economics and foreign studies. His ability to speak Indonesian took him to far parts of the world to meet new friends. In his profession, he worked as a financial investor.
Jorren was an avid Duck fan and he always enjoyed the out-of-doors, especially the ocean. He loved fishing and swimming and good conversations with friends and family-especially a good political debate.
Jorren was beloved by his family and many friends for his generous, giving spirit, his loving caring manner, his thoughtfulness, and his wonderful sense of humor. He will be greatly missed.
A memorial service was held on June 18, at Gabriel Park in Portland.

I just read in Sunday's Oregonian that Jorren had passed away a month ago! I'm sorry I didn't know and I'm sorry I did not get to attend the service. I am so sorry for your loss and for the world's loss. I had actually tried to find Jorren a few months ago to see how he was doing. I knew him from Aloha High School--1987-88 and from Beaverton Foursquare church. I was in Mexico with him and I also was on the San Juan Islands bike trip as well as retreats and camps. I remember his bike accident as he was just ahead of my group. I was new to Aloha High School in 1988, having moved from Hilhi. I knew Jorren and Jocelyn from church and was so happy to know I would be at the same school as him and some other kids from our youth group. Jorren was incredibly friendly to me. He invited me to share his locker with him and his other locker partner. I didn't have a great year at Aloha for the most part. My grades suffered and I had some of the strangest teachers. I was actually suicidal and wanted to drop out but because of people like Jorren, I hung in there and it was a success. Jorren drove me places sometimes and he was always listening to my crazy chattering. I sort of developed a little crush on him, but really, it was just a friendship. I think he was interested in Becky Bauer. He was a very godly brother in Christ. He made me feel truly valued. He made everyone feel like they were the most important person in the universe. He had a wonderful sense of humor and he was always laughing and smiling. I remember the big wooden cross he had hanging from the rear-view mirror in his little blue station wagon. I remember how beautiful his teeth were and his hair---why does God bless a man with such beautiful hair? I also remember his hugs. He was a brother to many. I will never, and have never forgotten him. I once "borrowed" all the pictures of him I could find in our youth group photo albums and I still have some to this day. Looking through my photo albums tonight, I found his senior picture--so sweet--he was wearing a lovely white, blue and pink striped sweater. And on the back, this is what he wrote(all in caps) word for word:
ANGI,
GOD IS GOOD. GOD LOVES ME (YOU). GOD IS IN CHARGE. ANGI I HOPE YOUR FEET FIND THE FIRM UNSHAKABLE GROUND OF THE LORD (VERY, VERY FEW DO). THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING THAT YOU ARE AND WILL BE, THANK YOU FOR BEING MY HOLY, PURE, RIGHTEOUS SISTER.
LOVE YOUR BROTHER,
JORREN

Jorren had wonderful, beautiful eyes that I will never forget. He had a heart of compassion and I am convinced he made a difference wherever he went. I know I will see him again. Please feel free to contact me if you wish. God bless you all.
