Marion Menge Obituary

MARION J. MENGE
1936 - 2007

M.J. Menge, 70, attorney and civic leader, passed away on Saturday, February 3, 2007 in Pensacola, FL.
Mr. Menge was a partner in the law firm Shell, Fleming, Davis, & Menge and an active member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, and Pensacola Rotary. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Sandra Dennison Menge; his son Randy Menge of Pensacola, his daughter Vivian Gallo and her husband, John Gallo, of Jacksonville; his grandsons, Jackson and Patrick Gallo, Jacksonville; his brother Frank Menge, Jr. and sister-in-law, Jewell Menge of Panama City; his brother-in-law Denny Dennison and his wife Jane Dennison of Lake Charles, LA, and his nephews Josh Menge of Pensacola, and John Menge of Tallahassee. M.J. was a lifelong resident of Pensacola, graduating from Pensacola Junior College and later serving as legal counsel for over 30 years. PJC honored M.J. in 1999 by naming its new bell tower the "M.J. Menge Bell Tower". M.J. also attended the University of Florida for his undergraduate and law degrees, and was an avid Gator fan. He was known for his dedication to serving his community through his legal and civic work. M.J. served on judicial nominating commissions for the state and federal judiciary for the northern district of Florida for many years, and was recognized by the Escambia/Santa Rosa Bar Association for his outstanding service and awarded the Bar's Professionalism Award in 1999. He was the Chairman of the Homeporting Committee and the Pensacola Area Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Council, and led efforts in Tallahassee and Washington, D.C. to keep the military presence strong in Pensacola. A longtime member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, M.J. led the board of deacons, served as an elder, on the building committee, and as a youth group leader. M.J. served on numerous local boards, often as President or Chairman, including the Escambia County Commission on Charter Government, the PJC Foundation, Baptist Hospital, the United Way, the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Alumni Association, YMCA, Pensacola Sports Association, Legal Aid Society, Pensacola Housing Authority, Historic Pensacola Preservation Board, and the UWF Council of Advisors. He was honored to receive Pensacola's Community Leader of the Year Award in 1979, the Pensacola Kiwanis Civic Award in 1991 and 2000, the United Way Distinguished Community Service Award in 1994, the Spirit of Pensacola Award in 1997, and the Grover Robinson Service Award from the Rotary Club of Pensacola. M.J. thoroughly enjoyed his work with the Fiesta of Five Flags, especially his tenure as the 54th Don Tristan de Luna in 2003. He was a loving husband and father, legal advocate, civic leader, and generous counselor, and we will miss him dearly.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, February 6 at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 3400 Bayou Blvd, from 5pm - 7pm.
The Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, February 7 at 11 a.m. at Trinity Presbyterian Church. Burial is private.

My memories of MJ are fond. I had little exposue to him in hs - having attended PHS only my senior year. Yet he remembered me when I needed legal help and recommended an atty. outside his firm because he felt that atty. better met my needs. And, when I attended a Rotary meeting in P'cola, he recognized me and took me under his wing and made me feel very special. I shall miss him.

I've heard it said that there is no such thing as an honest lawyer. That cannot be true, however, because MJ Menge showed us an honest lawyer every day that he practiced law. His priority was helping people. Clients received more legal services than his bills every reflected. It seems to me that everyone he met became a friend. MJ's life demonstrated to us why lawyers are referred to as counselors. He unselfishly offered his wise counsel not only to clients but to great multitudes who sought his wisdom daily. We thank MJ's family and the law firm of Shell, Fleming, Davis, & Menge for sharing MJ with us all these years. You will never know how many lives have been touched by your generosity. MJ will forever be an example of how each of us should live each day on this earth.

Dear Family: I am an opponent in profession and an advocate in person M.J. Having worked against him as a firece competitor for his clients and with him as a firece competitor for his community, we all have the utmost respect and admiration for an example for all. One of my fondest memories was one of those trips to Washington to meet the Pentagon brass and our get togethers afterwords. That is when he earned a well deserved nickname that I reminded him off often. M.J. was and will always be one of the best examples of a "citizen" and "gentleman" to me.

Mr. Menge was a very special man. He treated everyone with the same kindness and compassion whether you were an acquaintence or a great friend. He was a delight to work with at Shell, Fleming when I worked there as a legal secretary. His door was always open for advice or an encouraging word. He will be missed here on earth but I know he is in a better place, free from pain, and celebrating with his Heavenly Father. May we all learn from the example he demonstrated before us.

What an honor it was to work with Mr. Menge for over 20 years. His example of caring for others was a true inspiration. We used to tease him about being out of the office so often that we had to re-introduce ourselves every once in awhile. Knowing he was doing work for the betterment of Pensacola, though, was a true calling for him. I will miss him.

Even though I did not see M.J. very much, he always greeted me with a firm handshake and a certain twinkle in his eyes. That made me feel very special, especially when I was a small girl visting Uncle Frank and Aunt Ruby. My mother, Sybil Brown, believed him to be a great man...and he is and will always live in the hearts of all the hands that he shook. God blessed you with so many wonderful memories and heart warming handshakes. They will keep you and yours steadfast and on the M.J. Menge course of life.
