William A. Green Sr. CHESAPEAKE - On Aug. 11, 2008, at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center, William A. "Gene" Green Sr., 74, of the 200 block of Doria Trail, was called from his earthly life to a more peaceful life with the Lord. William A. Green Sr., born May 13, 1934, was the son of the late William Henry Green and Gladys (Claddle) Styron Green. He was a native of Norfolk. Gene was a graduate of St. Joseph's Catholic School and Norfolk State University and pursued courses on the graduate level at Hampton University. Gene was employed with the Postal Service (USPS) as a mail carrier for 32 years where he had served as a union rep for the mail carriers. He was also employed at Norfolk State University as a mail clerk for seven years. Gene served in the U.S. Army for two years and as a reservist in the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Navy for 20 years. He was a member of Arabia Temple No. 12 and Brighton Rock Lodge, PHA. He also was a member with the Chesapeake Del-Gents, Social Gents of Tidewater and several bowling leagues. Gene was a member of First Calvary Baptist Church in Norfolk where he sang with the Chancel Choir. Gene leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 43 years, O. Maxine Townes Green; four sons, William A. "Alex" Green Jr. of Chesapeake, Rodney Jones and Ronnie Eugene Jones of Baltimore and Carlton Alexander Brooks of Portsmouth; three sisters, Lucille Matthews of Philadelphia, Ella (BE-BE) Humphrey Lamb, Patricia G. Wyche (Leonard) of Chesapeake; one brother, Earnest "Bubba" Green (Della) of Chesapeake; two goddaughters, Dr. LaTonya Wyche Ricks (Eric) and JenAl Lassiter, both of Chesapeake; and a dear and close friend of many years, Mr. Mervin McCoy of Chesapeake. Gene also has an uncle, Charlie Styron (Geneva) and Aunt Pearl Styron, both of Oriental, N.C., and aunts, Elnora Styron Hagmon and Thelma L. Styron of Newport News. He was predeceased by two sisters, Alice Lois Bolling and Barbara Renee Green Snowden and one brother, Carlton "Bernard" Casey Green. He also leaves to cherish his memory grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, brother, sister-laws and a host of other family members. The funeral will be conducted noon Saturday in First Calvary Baptist Church by Dr. J.L. White Sr. Burial will be in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. Friends may join the family from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday in Graves Funeral Home Chapel and other times at the residence, 200 Doria Trail, Chesapeake.
