Millard Layden Obituary


Millard T. Layden Sr. TYNER - Millard Thomas "Shorty" Layden Sr., 68, of the 400 block of County Line Road, died Aug. 13, 2008, in his home. Mr. Layden was born in Perquimans County and was the son of the late James Oliver Sr. and Ruth Winslow Layden. A retired mechanical supervisor with Lipton Tea in Suffolk after 32 years of employment, he was a member of Center Hill Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon and was active in the Men's Brotherhood and the adult choir. Other involvements included building handicap ramps for the elderly through the Baptist Men's Association and various mission trips to the Ukraine, Honduras and stateside fields. Surviving are his wife of nearly 48 years, Carolyn Chappell Layden; a daughter, Debbie L. Whitehurst and husband Greg; a son, Millard T. Layden Jr., all of Tyner; three sisters, Ruth Ann Riddick of Smithfield, Va., Betty Lois Lane of Orlando, Fla. and Marvis Parrish of Hertford; three brothers, James O. Layden Jr. and Kenneth Ray Layden Sr., both of Belvidere and Wesley E. Layden Sr. of Hobbsville; and three granddaughters, Haley and Olivia Whitehurst and Kayla Layden. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Center Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. Reagan Marsh and the Rev. Don English. Burial will follow in the Chappell Family Cemetery on Hunter's Fork Road. Friends may join the family Saturday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, and all other times at the home.
