Bob Turner Obituary


Bob S. Turner VIRGINIA BEACH - Bob S. Turner, 82, passed away Aug. 12, 2008. A native of Suffolk, he was the husband of the late Louise B. Turner. He served five years in the Merchant Marines where he survived two ships torpedoed during World War II. He was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict where he was stationed in Fort Eustis as part of the 714 RR Battalion and 384th Army Band. He retired from Norfolk and Western Railroad as senior locomotive engineer after 40 years of service. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Suffolk, Kempsville Masonic Lodge No. 196 AF&AM, Scottish Rite Bodies 32nd degree, Khedive Shrine Temple, Chesapeake Shrine Club, Great Bridge Senior Club and Norfolk Moose Lodge No. 39. He served on the board of directors of the Harbor Point Cotillion Club and as a director of Nansemond Cotillion Club and was a member of Parents without Partners. Bob was recognized as the "mayor" of Tarleton Oaks Condominiums. He was the first to move in and was very proud of his new home and making friends with all his neighbors. He was a friend to everyone, loved being with people, a giving person, always ready with a kind word and a smile, appreciative of everything done for him. He truly loved as he was loved. Bob loved to dance and always attended the cotillions. Bob is survived by his stepdaughter, Trina C. and husband Watt S. Perley of Virginia Beach; stepson, Frank D. and wife Carol Childress of Statesville, N.C.; sister, Mrs. Charles Taylor Darden of Smithfield, Va.; three grandchildren, Kim H. Perley of Virginia Beach, David C. Childress of Statesville and John A. Childress of Clemmons, N.C.; three great- grandchildren, nieces and one nephew. He was preceded in death by his brother, Gus Crumpler Turner Jr. and his twin sister, Betty Turner. The family would like to express a special thank you to the staff of Oakwood Rehabilitation Center for their care and love in our time of need. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, with Chaplain Keith Willyard officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be private in Riverside Cemetery, Courtland, Va. Memorial donations may be made to Khedive Shrine Center, Transportation Fund, 645 Woodlake Drive, Chesapeake, VA 23320. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.

My deepest sympathy to Bob's family. He was my neighbor and my friend and I will miss him.

I will never forget when I moved into my condo and what a warm welcome I received from him. He always watched out for me and I will be forever grateful that I had the opportunity to know him.
