Frank W. Hollowell Jr. ELIZABETH CITY - Frank Whiteley Hollowell Jr., 88, died Aug. 13, 2008, at his home in Weeksville. Frank was born in Portsmouth and moved to his family home of Bayside Plantation in Elizabeth City at the age of 3. Frank was the son of the late Lucy Silvester Hollowell and Frank Whiteley Hollowell. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Vaughan Hollowell, and his sister, Virginia Hurst Hollowell. Frank graduated from Elizabeth City High School, attended N.C. State University one year before transferring to the U.S. Naval Academy where he graduated in 1943. He received a MA in education at Stanford University in 1953. After a career in the Navy, he retired as commander in 1964 and moved back to Elizabeth City, where he managed his family farms in Elizabeth City and Bethel, N.C. Frank was a kind and generous man who was always interested in the community. He served on many boards including the Federal Land Bank of Ahoskie and Girls Inc. He was also an active member of Rotary International serving in various capacities throughout his career. Frank had a special interest in the Museum of the Albemarle and donated many artifacts from Bayside to help form the museum. Frank is survived by his son, Frank "Whit" Hollowell and wife Deborah of Richmond Hill, Ga.; a daughter Abbey H. Manning and husband Garry of Elizabeth City; two stepsons, Robert Keely and Douglas Vaughan Keely of Naples, Fla.; and three grandchildren who always held a special place in his heart, Nathan H. Manning and Alex and Emily Hollowell. The family will receive friends Saturday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Twiford Funeral Home, Elizabeth City, (252) 335-4395. A private memorial service will be held for the family at a later date. The family wishes to thank everyone who supported them and special thanks is given to his caregivers.
