Ollie J. Amon Jr. SUFFOLK - On Aug. 14, 2008, Ollie James Amon Jr. claimed God's promise of the resurrection. As an active member of Monumental United Methodist Church, he served in many leadership roles including singing in the chancel choir for more than 65 years. He served as former president and, most recently, as treasurer of the Portsmouth District United Methodist Men, the Bennetts Creek Ruritan Club, Navy Bean Counters, William and Mary Football Club and numerous community organizations. He had 32 years of civilian government service with the U.S. Navy where he received the Navy's Superior Civilian Service Award. He was also a retired Naval Reserve officer. The celebration of life service will be held Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in Monumental United Methodist Church, Dinwiddie and Queen Streets, Portsmouth, with the Revs. Robert E. Friend Jr. and W. Dabney Walters officiating. A reception will follow the service in the church fellowship hall. Entombment will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Bennetts Creek Chapel, today from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Monumental United Methodist Church building fund. www.SturtevantFuneralHome.com.

Darlene - Know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family, as you face the days ahead. We will miss Ollie's smiling face in Blackstone this fall, but we know that his spirit will be there with us, celebrating our God and the men of the UMC. God has truly healed him! He is at home.

Darlene, please know that Ollie Jr. has been in my heart and in my prayers during his illness. I only wish the timing had been such that Mama and Daddy and I could have visited before he was called home. I think you understand the reasons it was impossible to accomplish. I lit a luminaria for him at our RELAY FOR LIFE - and I hope that he somehow felt the love and healing wishes that were sent his way so often. And I certainly hope that you realize that I never thought of him without similarily thinking of you as you made this cancer journey by his side. Now that he has reached the other shore, I wish you the peace that should come to one who has walked the path as far as allowed with a loved one, knowing he "fought the good fight" all the way.

Ollie Amon - what can I say? He was such a gentle and genuine spirit. I truly saw Christ in him. His smile will forever be embedded in my memory. Darlene, you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers during this time. Please remember that memories are one very special gift from God that even death cannot destroy. With great love, admiration, and sorrow! Wes
