Henry Ange Obituary

Henry L. Ange VIRGINIA BEACH - Henry L. "Jack" Ange, 81, passed away Aug. 25, 2008, in Sentara Leigh Hospital in Virginia Beach. Born Nov. 30, 1926, in Plymouth, N.C., Jack spent his childhood in the Berkeley section of Norfolk and had been a resident of the College Park section of Virginia Beach for the last 39 years. Jack attended George Washington and Robert Gatewood grammar schools, and later attended Ruffner Junior High School. He married his teenage sweetheart, Myrtle Sawyer Ange, on Jan. 1, 1944, the only woman he ever loved. Together they joyfully raised four children, William Ange, Bonnie Patten Ange, Jimmy Smith and Melissa Tressler, children of Bonnie. Jack was a veteran of World War II, serving as a paratrooper based out of Fort Benning, Ga. He completed a four-year auto mechanic apprenticeship program and then worked as an auto shop foreman from 1954-1957. From 1957 until his retirement in 1982, he worked for Prudential Insurance Company and won many local and national awards. Jack, a devoted Christian, was an elder in Fairview Church of Christ and later became a member and deacon in The Rock Church of Virginia Beach. He was active in his community and spent approximately 20 years heading both the Rock Church Bowling League and Golf Group, as well as teaching Sunday school and First Principles for the church; he was also the president of the Lynwood Shores Civic League during the 1960s. His favorite past time was golf and Jack was a former Senior Virginia Beach Amateur Golf Champion. He shot one hole-in-one at The Palms Course at Disney World in Orlando, Fla., and shot his age on the golf course each year from the time he turned 71 until last year. Jack was an amazing craftsman and fabricator. Just this past Thursday, he finished building a working hydrogen converter to double the gas mileage on his car. Jack is survived and will be dearly missed by his wife of 64 years, Myrtle Sawyer Ange; his children, William Ange, Jimmy Smith and Melissa Tressler; as well as William's wife Sharon and their children, Carrie Willis, Tara Ange and Christy Ange. He was predeceased by his brother, Donnie Ange; sisters, Mary Glass and Marie Hicks; and his daughter, Bonnie Ange. He is also survived by his brothers, Claudius Ange, Charles Ange, Larry Ange; two sisters, Patricia McConniel and Betty Anne DeBose; and four great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in Rock Church, Virginia Beach. Following the service, the family will receive friends at the Ange family home. The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Indian River Chapel, today from 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Disabled American Veterans. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.

Many fond memories of Jack and Myrtle through the growing up years at Rock. Enjoyed the insurance conversations with Jack too. Always felt better and lifted up after spending time with this gentleman. Heaven has received a champion and we here on earth have said goodbye to our friend, mentor and brother.

My deepest sympathy to the Ange family. Mr Ange was a patient at the doctor's office I work for. He will be truly missed.

My husband, Tom, and I were in Jack's First Principals' class many years ago. Tom also worked for Jack for a lot of years at Prudential and loved him, deeply, as I did. He and Myrtle were very, very dear to us. I am so sorry we have lost him.....but Heaven has gained him. With much love, Martha Laurendeau
