Charles Kiley Obituary

Charles Sullivan Kiley VIRGINIA BEACH - Charles Sullivan Kiley, 85, died Aug. 25, 2008, in a Virginia Beach Hospital. A native of Portsmouth, he graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Helen Fantone Kiley; daughter, Ann Kiley Crenshaw and her husband Clarke; sons, Daniel S. Kiley and his wife Kathy and William S. Kiley and his wife Stephanie; and his beloved grandchildren, Clarke H. Crenshaw Jr., Gordon R. Crenshaw, Catherine A. Kiley, Mary M. Kiley, Patrick S. Kiley and Sarah E. Kiley. He is also survived by his sister, Catherine Kiley Aldworth of Hilton Head, S.C. Mr. Kiley served in World War II as a fighting Seabee. A civil engineer, he became the town engineer for Virginia Beach in 1951. He played a pivotal role in the merger of the Town of Virginia Beach and Princess Anne County. Thereafter, he served as the first director of Public Works for the city of Virginia Beach. Mr. Kiley leaves his mark on the city with projects including the Municipal Center, Mount Trashmore, major city infrastructure projects, and the Norwegian Lady. After his retirement from the city, he continued to work until his recent illness with his dear friend, F. Wayne McLeskey. Mr. Kiley was a lifelong community servant. He became a member of the Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad shortly after its inception, serving as the captain of the squad. He was proud of his sons, both of whom have served the squad, Dan as a former captain. He was pleased that his grandson, Gordon, recently became the third generation to serve the squad. He quietly and unassumingly served the city he helped to establish. Mr. Kiley served on many boards and commissions. In later years, he continued to serve his community as a member of the Parks and Recreation Commission and as a marshall for the city's golf courses. He was a man of integrity and unconditional faith. He was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He loved his family, friends, church and community. He never met a stranger and genuinely enjoyed his many friendships, especially his many pals at Wareing's Gym. His warm smile and laughing blue Irish eyes will be missed by all who loved him. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. in Star of the Sea Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad, 740 Virginia Beach Blvd., Virginia Beach, VA 23451. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, is handling arrangements. www.hdoliver.com.

Goodbye Uncle Charlie. We'll surely miss your charming smile, your great laugh and your mischievous blue eyes. You warmed the room up before you even entered. Mom talked of you fondly and often. Much love. Susan and Tom Boosinger

Dan, and the Kiley Family,
There was only room in this world for one special "Charlie", and I'm sure he'll keep them laughing upstairs just like he did here. God Bless.

Dear Helen, Ann, Dan and William, We were all so blessed to have known that wonderful man that was your loving Husband and Father. He had a way of putting you at ease and you knew you were loved and the center of his attention. His personality flowed with humor, kindness and the love for his fellow man. I only met Uncle Charles a few times in my life but he made a positive impact on me when I needed help. My faith tells me Charles is in Heaven safe and sound. I pray for your loss. With great sympathy, Tim Thompson

Helen,Ann,Dan & William,
I am so sad to hear about Uncle Charlie, I always referred to him as my funny uncle. The times I was in his company he always made me laugh and he truly loved hearing about what was going on in your life. He had that wonderful Kiley sense of humor.
God Bless you all and I will keep you in my prayers and thoughts. Patti

We are stricken with grief over the loss of our dear friend and colleague, Charlie. Let us remember the departed soul with joy, and know he will keep Heaven lively by dancing an Irish jig.

Let our prayers strengthen the family.

The world is a lesser place without you here Charlie. Play all the pain free golf you want and know that every time the bell dings here at work I'll smile and think of you. God Bless.
