Jesse Stephenson Obituary


Jesse Stephenson Jr. SURRY - Jesse W. "Singie" Stephenson Jr., formerly of Portsmouth, died Aug. 23, 2008, on his 84th birthday. He was the oldest child born to the late Mr. Jesse W. Stephenson Sr. and Mrs. Ada Bright Stephenson. Singie was educated in the public schools of Portsmouth. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Later he and his brother "Bobby" owned Stephenson Brothers Trucking Co. He was also employed at several Naval facilities in the Tidewater area. Jesse and his wife, the former Miss Pauline Brown, moved their family to Surry County. They became members of St. Paul Holiness Church in Elberon, Va., pastored by the Rev. Ernest Green. Survivors to cherish his legacy include his loving and devoted wife, Pauline; sons, Jesse III and Rubin (Sonya); daughters, Stacy, Ada and Amanda Stephenson; sisters, Mildred S. Rountree of Portsmouth, Marion S. White of Washington, D.C., and Lucy E. Paris of St. Petersburg, Fla.; nephew, Stephen A. Gripper of Gaithersburg, Md.; and several nieces, great-nieces and nephews; six sisters-in-law, three brothers-in-law and many other relatives and friends. The funeral for Jesse Stephenson will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in St. Paul Holiness Church in Elberon with the Rev. Ernest Green officiating. Services are entrusted to Poole's Funeral Home, Surry, Sabrina Hardy-Newby, funeral directress, (757) 357-4742.
